Honda Malaysia recalls Accord 2.0L models over Takata airbag defect

KUALA LUMPUR: Earlier today, Honda Malaysia issued a notice according to which the company is recalling as many as 9,998 units of the Accord 2.0L sedan. It is the second time that the car has been recalled and as per the company it has been done as a preventive measure. The recalled Accord models include car’s manufactured between 2003 - 2007. Earlier the vehicle was recalled in 2015.

In a statement released by the company it said, “Honda Malaysia deeply regrets to inform that this affected Accord (2.0L) 2003 – 2007 Year Model was one of the models involved in the previous Takata airbag inflator recalls,” Further, the statement said “As of today, there are no crashes or injuries related to the Takata driver front airbag inflator in the Accord (2.0L) 2003 – 2007 Year Model reported in Malaysia,”

According to Honda, customer safety is its top-most priority, and therefore the company urges the affected customers to get the driver’s side airbag replaced at the earliest. Concerned customers would be notified via letter carrying all the details regarding the recall and stock availability.

Honda Malaysia also clarified that the company would bear the entire cost of changing the driver side airbag. It further said that the stock would be available in stages and the company is trying its best to ensure 100% stock at the earliest.

The company urges the affected customers to pay heed to the matter as the airbag inflator may deploy with excessive internal pressure when activated. This might result in fatality or injury of the driver and even co-passenger. Honda also mentioned that no injuries or crashes related to the concerned models had been reported. Also, all the current selling models are free from the airbag defect.

As for 21st April 2019, Honda Malaysia has completed 243,720 replacement concerning to the Takata diver front airbag inflator. Thus bringing the completion ration to 92%.
