Recent Updates of Honda CR-V

Launched in the country in 2017, the Honda CR-V continues to have a good hold of the premium SUV segment. Following Honda’s attractive design language, the CR-V has a good road presence. It is available in two engine options - a 1.5-litre turbo engine with 193 PS and 243 Nm and a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine that churns out 154 PS and 189 Nm. CVT is standard across the board. You also get a 4WD variant.

At the KLIMS 2018, Honda showcased the CR-V Mugen concept which adds to the sportiness courtesy the new Mugen inspired body kit and Mugen badges on select parts of the vehicle. Also, the gorgeous Passion Red Pearl color makes the CR-V more desirable. We are still waiting for it to get launch. Meanwhile, the latest CR-V continues to sell at a starting price of RM 138,308.

The Europeans have had one for 13 years now and finally, it is the turn of the Philippines. We’re talking about the diesel powered version of the 7 seater Honda CR-V. For any large SUV, having a diesel powered version is as essential as having a hamburger in a McDonalds’ menu. There is little else that it is going to do other than haul large number of people and cargo. So, it just makes sense. And yet it took so long for Honda to bring it here.  The CR-V has been in production for 20 years now. In this time, this C-segment SUV has evolved in much the same way as the C-segment SUV niche itself. With competition from the likes of the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Montero, how does the CR-V fair in the SUV battle? Honda is selling the CR-V with two different engine choices. The old 2.0-litre VTEC is reserved for the 5-seater and uses a CVT for transmission. The 1.6 turbo diesel mated with the 9-speed automatic transmission gets used in the 7 seaters which come in three different variants. All except the top of the line diesel are equipped with front-wheel drive. The top spec comes with AWD. Prices start at Php 1648000 for the 5-seater and go up to Php 2086000 for the SX diesel

Interior & Features

The interior is functional and ergonomic but nothing special. However, it is well put together and uses some nice touches. The black interior is very classy. There is no more cheap looking plastic on the sloping dash. Soft feel materials abound and some wood-like finish is thrown in for good measure. Leather seats are standard across the range. The center console is inspired from the current Civic and looks as if the 7” touchscreen is floating on top of the dash. It comes with the latest connectivity options and is also equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The instrument cluster is a digital display. But not everything is digital or touch-based. The audio from the 4 speaker or 4 speaker + 4 tweeter sound system can be controlled through knobs which is a very welcome feature. Space is sufficient in the second row which also slide forward and back and can also recline if needed. The third row is not the most comfortable to be honest but they do get their own air conditioner vents and cup holders. When not in use, they can be easily stowed away with minimal effort. This frees up the cargo space which otherwise is 150 L. With the third row folded, it goes up to 472-litre and with both the second and third row down it becomes 967-litre. Other practical features include the four charging points in the front and two in the rear.

First off there is remotely any difference between the petrol and the diesel-powered CR-Vs from the outside. Honda has given the 2018 CR-V a facelift over the 4th gen CR-V. It looks very much the same but now comes with Civic style sleeker LED headlights and LED DRLs. The front overall looks less busy and goes better with the wing-like front fascia. Their ever so slightly upswept design makes the SUV look wider and bolder. As we move to the side we come across the party piece of this car’s design – the 18” 6-spoke alloys which look almost extra-terrestrial. As we move to the rear the signature D-pillar mounted LED taillights reveal themselves. Together with the dual exhaust, roof spoiler, and short overhang, it makes for a nice looking rear. SX Diesel being the top variant get some extra fripperies. It is the only one to get a high beam functionality along with a panoramic sunroof, shark fin antenna, rain-sensing wipers and most importantly, an electric power tailgate. The dimensions have not strayed too much. It is 4571 mm long, 1855 mm wide and 1657 mm high.  Ground clearance is 208 mm for the SX diesel and 198 mm for the other variants. Wheelbase at 2660 mm is same across the range. Tires are 235/60 across the range too except for the base V Diesel that gets 235/65.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

First the bad news. The CR-V diesel variant coming to the Philippines suffers due to the bad quality of fuel available in the country. Because of this, it is not on the same tuning as even the CR-V being sold in Thailand. The Earth Dreams Technology DOHC i-DTEC Turbo 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine then only produces 120 hp instead of 160 hp. While this is achieved at just 4000 rpm, the peak torque of 300 Nm comes at 2000 rpm. It may seem that this puts it at a disadvantage against the competition. But it is still Euro 4 compliant and thanks to 9 gears refined and fuel efficient. Honda claims that it can deliver as much as 18.9 kmpl. People looking for more power (and fewer seats) will have to go with the 1.6L SOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder, 16-valve petrol engine that comes in the 5 seater variant. It produces 154 hp at 6500 Nm rpm and 189 Nm of torque at 4300 rpm. As for performance, the CR-V is more dynamic than it looks. The steering and the chassis allow good handling. The steering provides good feedback. The ride inside is also comfortable if a bit firm. The seats do a good job with lumbar support and therefore help in avoiding backaches.

Braking & Safety

The SX Diesel gets the best in Honda’s detection tech with the whole gamut of Honda Sensing technologies. This includes adaptive cruise control (only on this variant), low speed follow, collision mitigation braking, lane keep assist, road departure mitigation, forward collision warning and lane departure warning. Otherwise standard across the range are agile handling assist, vehicle stability assist, hill start assist, driver attention monitor, front and passenger airbags, ABS with EBD, multi-view reverse camera, ISOFIX and an emergency stop signal. Side and curtain airbags, lane watch camera and walk away auto lock, however, are only present on the 5 seater and the SX diesel.

The space is good and gives sufficient legroom.

I have always been into big cars and this one just looks so sexy so I bought this last month. The black variant is my favourite as I am into all things black.
