As most of us are aware by now, the Malaysian car scene is no stranger to MPVs (or Multi-Purpose Vehicles). In fact, it’s one of the best-performing segments in the market, and it has been that way for a while. One of the prongs spearheading the affordable MPV battle in the country is the Chery Eastar. Initially launched in 2006, the Eastar soon went on to garner a decent audience base in the country.
Over the years, improvements and upgrades have been made to ensure that the Chery Eastar remains competitive enough. That being said, the Chinese carmaker has already released an all-new replacement for the Eastar, though the latter remains a fairly common sight on the roads of Malaysia over a decade after its first outing. As for its closest rivals, the 2019 Chery Eastar goes up against the likes of the Proton Exora, Perodua Alza, and Toyota Avanza.
The interior styling of the 2019 Chery Eastar isn’t necessarily awe-inspiring, but it certainly isn’t dull, either. The large, swooping design of the dashboard not only looks quite fancy but it also adds a sense of width to the cabin. The centrally-located instrument cluster is another instant eye-catcher, and is unlike most cars out there. There are also some faux wood and satin silver trim pieces to liven up the mood, and while the design is pretty decent, the same can’t be said about the poor quality of build and materials that are used.
Space for occupants is a complete non-issue, though the last row is only really comfortable for kids. The Chery Eastar comes with most of the basic features that one can expect, including power windows, electrically-adjustable ORVMs, leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry, leather upholstery, electric sunroof, dash-integrated infotainment system, automatic climate control etc.
Most MPVs aren’t especially gorgeous or even a sight to behold. Designers prioritise practicality and user-friendly ergonomics over head-turning styling cues. While some MPVs look moderately stylish and suave, the 2019 Chery Eastar isn’t one amongst them. The front fascia on certain trims of the Eastar may remind you of an Audi RS5 from the mid-2000s. The long snout is characterised by a big (seemingly) single-piece grille with some chrome surrounds. The large, double-barrel headlights flanking the grille look purposeful, though not particularly tasteful. Finally, there’s a well-moulded bumper that features a couple of integrated foglights and air intake vents at the bottom.
The relatively bland-looking side profile of the Chery Eastar won’t stand out in a crowded parking lot, but the ‘sporty’ side skirts, chunky 16-inch alloy wheels, flared fenders, and some noticeable chrome detailing does spice things up a bit. Meanwhile, the rear window is flanked by a pair of vertically-arranged, partial-LED taillights and a high-mounted LED stop light. A protruding rear bumper with integrated foglights and a discreet single exhaust pipe finish off the whole package.
The 2019 Chery Eastar shares its basic underpinnings with the E8 mid-size sedan. However, the 1,560 kg, seven-seat Eastar is obviously larger and thus sports dimensions of 4,662 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width, 1,590 mm in height, and its wheelbase measures 2,800 mm.
The Chery Eastar features a fully-independent McPherson setup at the front and semi-independent ones at the back. Its softly-sprung suspension results in a comfortable ride without compromising highway stability. As expected, handling isn’t the Eastar’s strong suit, with enough body roll around bends to deter one from any kind of spirited driving. The cabin NVH levels are low enough at city pace, but they get irritable at highway speeds.
Under the bonnet of the 2019 Chery Eastar is a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-popper that develops 134 hp and 180 Nm of torque. Not exactly an earth-scorcher, a 4-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive layout of the Eastar mean a top speed of 170 kmph. Meanwhile, fuel consumption stands at around 14 kmpl.
The Chery Eastar comes equipped with all-around disc brakes with ABS and EBD for improved braking performance. Other safety features include dual front airbags, high-strength steel impact protection beams and crumple zones resulting in a 4-star NCAP safety rating.
In conclusion, the 2019 Chery Eastar offers a fair package, especially if you’re on the lookout for a compact MPV around the RM 81,000 range. However, it’s certainly now quite old in the tooth, not the best-in-class, and doesn’t offer anything particularly special.
I used to drive a Chery Eastar almost on a daily basis a few years back. MPVs certainly make sense for people with large families. An MPV is also the perfect car to go on a weekend trip with friends. This is a China-made car and is more affordable than other MPVs. The ride quality was decent. The Eastar is
The Chery Eastar is a stylish and elegant wagon offering a great package of style, comfort and convenience. The car is very affordable and practical and gets a unique exterior appearance along with really great interiors and a wide range of modern features. The car gets a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 134 hp of power and 180 Nm
If you need an amazing MPV at an affordable price, you might as well not find a better option than the Chery Eastar in Malaysia. It is my favourite wagon right now and I am absolutely elated with the driving experience ever since I bought the car. The car is simple and sophisticated both in terms of interior and exterior
If it comes to choosing an entry-level wagon in the Malaysian market, I don’t think there are too many options that could be better than the Chery Eastar. The car is simply a no-nonsense, practical and utilitarian vehicle made for all-purpose and daily usage. The MPV is spacious, comfortable and comes with a host of tech and convenience features and
In my viewpoint this car is a standard midsize wagon. I bought this for my joint family. It presents a miniroom like feature. It is quite compact and safe. It's central locking feature helps me to be sure of my children's safety. The engine of the car delivers me a decent performance of near about 1970cc displacement. My family loves
The Eastar is my go-to choice when it comes to travelling with my family, be it in the city or over long distances. This MPV offers a spacious cabin that has ample legroom and headspace in all the rows. The seats are very well-cushioned too, hence you can easily relax in them during long journeys. The Eastar is laced with
I have been driving the Chery Eastar for almost a year now and I am satisfied with its functionality. But, to be honest, when I first saw the Chery Eastar I wasn’t that impressed by its appearance. Though it wasn’t dull, it wasn’t attractive either. However, once I got into the car, I did change my mind. Its large, well-designed
When I heard about this car what I immediately liked is the name which as has origin in china giving meaning to as " Oriental Sun (东方之子). The Chery Easter's (B11, B16) are a mid-sized car with a body type of 4-door Salon. Both of them shows a layout front engine, and a front-wheel front-wheel a transmission of 5- speed
I have seen my friends boasting about their car’s interiors but I wasn’t too impressed because the exterior looked like a zombie. For me, a beautiful car means a beautiful and functional exterior and interior. This is why I have always been choosy about my cars. But, fortunately, Cherry International introduced this amazing SUV car, whose interiors and exterior both
The gigantic Chery Eastar was introduced in the Malaysian market long back in 2012, since then it has been an upright performer. Whatsoever, the cause for its overwhelming popularity is the like for MPVs that the people have in Malaysia. I bought it because I was amazed by the safety features of this car. It almost possesses all the well
