Boasting a comfortable cabin, loads of space, and European design and refinement, this Golf based sedan was first launched in 2016. In 2017, the second-gen model received a major update and is now based on Volkswagen’s global MQB platform.

Volkswagen is one of the most popular automakers in the Malaysian market, though the number of models in the lineup is limited. Even with the limited options, customers find great confidence in cars from this brand.

One such model is the Volkswagen Tiguan, an SUV that is both powerful and attractive at the same time. In fact, ever since the second generation model was launched in the country on April 2017, the preference surged higher. This new generation Tiguan was first displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2015 and had its built on the company’s MQB platform. This also made sure that the car is bigger in dimensions now.

At the time of launch, the Comfortline trim was priced at RM 148,990, while the Highline was given a tag of RM 168,990.

Interior & Features

Things become very feature-rich and once you enter inside. The increase in the wheelbase has helped the Tiguan have a bigger and more comfortable cabin. The all-black colour tone looks classy if not anything else.

The Comfortline trim has fabric upholstery from Rhombus and a Composition Media infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen display. The system is mated with SD card reader, AUX-in, USB, Bluetooth, and eight speakers.

On the other hand, the Highline trims have the Vienna combination leather upholstery has the same 8-inch Active Info Display but with more features. Besides this, the air-conditioning system has the three-zone feature.

The adoption of the MQB platform from the Volkswagen Group has made the Tiguan grow by 60 mm on the length and 30 mm on the width. The wheelbase is also longer by 77 mm. However, despite the increase in the size, the car is still 50 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.

The car is available in two trim levels and they can be easily distinguished visually. The lower variant rides on 17-inch wheels with 215-section tyres and has reflector halogen lights. On the other hand, the top end trim has 18-inch wheels and 235-section tyres. The LED headlamps are slimmer and can be further distinguished by the extra chrome on the grille.

Ride & Handling

When it comes to handling the Volkswagen, you cannot deny the fact that it is almost as smooth as butter. In fact, you will rarely find an SUV that would feel so light on the steering and so grunty on the throttle, especially in this price range.

The big and thick tyres have a very good grip on the road and wouldn’t get the wheels thrown off so easily. The automatic transmission is almost effortless, though there are the usual hiccups when you take it around congested stop-go traffic. However, once you are out of the crawling traffic, the road is all yours to conquer.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

Under the hood, the presently-sold Volkswagen Tiguan is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-litre TSI motor that can churn out 150 PS of power, between 5,000 and 6,000 rpm, and a peak torque of 250 Nm, which comes between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. The power is channelised to the wheels via a 6-speed DSG gearbox with a wet clutch.

With such an amazing power on the throttle, the car can hit the 100 kmph hour mark from a standstill in just 8.9 seconds.

Braking & Safety

With the Volkswagen Tiguan, the company gives a good dose of safety features. Starting from the basics, there are several airbags for the front occupants as well as for the front sides. The steering wheel has the speed-sensing electromechanical feature. The braking duties are handled by the anti-lock braking system and brake assist.

Besides these, there are many driver assistance programmes like the hill-hold control, electronic stability control, multi-collision brake system, and active bonnet pedestrian protection. Other basic features include 3-point seat belts along with a warning that reminds the fastening for the front seats.

There hasn’t been a major change in price ever since the second generation car was first launched in 2017. It also happens to be one of the best 5-seater SUVs for picnics and long trims due to its immensely comfortable cabin and an overly large boot space. Hence, for a price of around RM 165,990 presently, the car is worth every penny you pay.
