All-new Ford Ranger FX4 Max now on sale in Thailand

KUALA LUMPUR: Ford unveiled an all-new variant of the Ranger pickup truck in the Thai market, called the FX4 Max. Over the standard model, the new iteration not only features cosmetic alterations but also a glut of mechanical upgrades inspired by the Ranger Raptor. This makes it an affordable option for the customers who want more off-road capability.

Starting with mechanical specifications, the new Ranger FX4 Max is equipped with a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged four-cylinder diesel mill borrowed from the Ranger Raptor and WildTrak, churning out a maximum power of 213 hp and a peak torque of 500 Nm. The engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox sending power to all four wheels of the offroad pickup. This mechanical combination is identical to the Ranger Raptor, however, the baby Raptor misses out on the Terrain Management System that is exclusively available for the big brother.

Other mechanical highlights include the Fox monotube dampers on all four corners and an upgraded suspension set-up with more suspension travel and a taller ride height. These add-ons give away a good off-road capability to the Ranger FX4 Max. Adding to the kit are upgraded BF Goodrich all-terrain tyres, which are wrapped around 17-inch alloys. The Ford Ranger FX4 Max ground clearance measures 256 mm (20 mm more than the XLT).

Moving to the visual appearance, the new Ranger trim features a FORD-lettered mesh grille with a dark grey surround on the front. The door handles, mirror caps, wheel arch moldings, and rear tray are painted in Bolder Grey shade. Added to the exterior highlights are a matte black sports roll bar and a tubular sidestep. 

The variant-exclusive touches inside the cabin are Alcantara upholstery with carbon-fibre trimming and FX4 MAX embroidered logos, and six auxiliary power switches on top of the dash, which allow owners to connect appliances like winches or LED light bars.

The American automaker offers the Ranger FX4 Max in the neighbouring market for 1,189,000 Thai baht (equals to RM 159,000), which is around 500,000 Thai baht cheaper than the Ranger Raptor.
