Second-gen Kia Niro teased ahead of debut

KUALA LUMPUR: Kia is set to introduce the second-generation Niro at the Seoul Mobility Show on November 25 but before that, it teased the first glimpse of the car. The teaser unveils the exterior silhouette and an interior sketch of the electrified compact crossover. 

On the front, the upcoming Kia Niro will have similar LED daytime running lights seen on the 2019 HabaNiro concept. Also, the vertical tail lights featuring a boomerang-like shape are borrowed from the same concept.

The automaker says that the design of the 2022 Niro is inspired by the natural world that sustainable mobility intends to protect. It appeals to the diverse needs of sustainability-conscious buyers as it connects “eco-friendliness with fun and driving pleasure.”

Unlike the exterior, the cabin of the second-gen Kia Niro seems to be completely from the prototype shown two years ago. The upcoming car gets a two-spoke steering wheel, an asymmetrical central console, and a wide twin-screen for the instrument panel and infotainment. The latter can be commonly seen on the brand’s recently introduced products, including the new EV6.

On the mechanical front, Kia uses an adapted version of a combustion car's platform for the revamped Niro. It may be offered in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric formats just like the ongoing model, however, this will be confirmed only on D-Day.

Kia will be unveiling the new Niro only after a week after showcasing the Concept EV9 at the 2021 AutoMobility LA show. The EV9 is based on the E-GMP architecture and features fast-charging technology. It recharges from 10% to 80% in just 20 to 30 minutes with a 350-kW charger and offers a cruising range of 480 km.
