Its Malaysian preview follows an earlier appearance at the 2026 Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show, although final pricing and full local specifications have yet to be announced.
Under the skin is GWM’s new Hi2 Intelligent Hybrid Technology, which combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a two-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) and a 1.09 kWh battery.
Combined system output is rated at 223 PS and 476 Nm, while the ORA 5 HEV is claimed to accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.

On that front, the ORA 5 HEV is claimed to consume just 4.4 litres per 100 km, with GWM quoting a total driving range of more than 1,100 km on a single tank.
The company is also highlighting an efficiency record achieved in China, where an ORA 5 HEV recorded 3.74 litres per 100 km over a 3,004 km real-world driving challenge, earning a Guinness World Records title for the lowest fuel consumption by a production hybrid SUV across China’s directly administered municipalities.

Despite being positioned as a compact urban crossover, the ORA 5 HEV is not particularly small.
It measures 4,471 mm long, 1,833 mm wide and 1,641 mm tall, with a 2,720 mm wheelbase.
That puts it in an interesting position in the Malaysian market. It is larger than hybrid B-segment SUVs such as the Toyota Yaris Cross HEV and Honda HR-V e, while its overall length is already around Toyota Corolla Cross HEV territory.
This means the ORA 5 HEV could potentially be cross-shopped against quite a broad range of hybrid SUVs, depending on where GWM eventually positions it on price.
Its relatively long wheelbase should also help maximise passenger space within a compact overall footprint, although GWM has yet to release detailed Malaysian figures for cabin room or luggage capacity.

Styling continues the softer and more expressive design language associated with ORA models, although the ORA 5 adopts a taller crossover body rather than the lower hatchback proportions seen on earlier models.
GWM describes the design philosophy as “Born From Nature · Made for the City”, with flowing surfaces and a more lifestyle-oriented appearance intended to distinguish the ORA 5 from more conventional compact SUVs.
The design has already received international recognition, with the ORA 5 named 2025 Design of the Year at the London Design Awards, according to GWM.
As for the cabin, GWM Malaysia has yet to publish a complete local equipment list, so features such as infotainment screen sizes, seat specifications, audio equipment, boot capacity and the final ADAS package remain unconfirmed for Malaysia, but we could see at the preview it does have Android Auto and AppleCarPlay.
App control is listed among the preview specifications, but no further details have been provided at this stage.

For now, the GWM ORA 5 HEV remains a preview model, with pricing, variants and the final Malaysian equipment specification yet to be announced.
What is already clear is that GWM is positioning it as more than simply another fuel-efficient compact SUV. With 223 PS, 476 Nm, a claimed 4.4L/100 km fuel-consumption figure and more than 1,100 km of driving range, the ORA 5 HEV appears to be targeting buyers who want hybrid efficiency without sacrificing useful performance.
The big question now is price.
If GWM can position the ORA 5 HEV competitively against models such as the Toyota Yaris Cross HEV, Honda HR-V e and Toyota Corolla Cross HEV, it could become one of the more interesting additions to Malaysia’s increasingly crowded hybrid SUV market.
