The infotainment touchscreen supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Bluetooth connectivity. It provides access to navigation, audio controls, and vehicle settings. The system is responsive, though some users have noted occasional glitches, requiring a switch back to the native interface to resolve. The infotainment unit is connected to a nine-speaker Infinity sound system. The GWM Tank 300 Ultra comes with a higher-spec Infinity system with QuantumLogic surround sound and an external amplifier.

The digital instrument panel offers customizable layouts, displaying essential driving information such as speed, trip data, and safety alerts. It also provides off-road metrics like altitude, air pressure, gradient, body roll angle, and tire pressure, enhancing situational awareness during adventurous drives.

Pros and cons

The rear seats fold completely flat, facilitating easier loading of bulky items. The setup comes with side-hinged tailgate with a full-size spare wheel mounted externally. The setup may pose challenges in tight parking spaces because of increased outward swing.

Passengers on the rear-seat gets a fold-down central armrest with two cupholders for rear passengers. Rear doors get bottle holders, and seatbacks feature map pockets. Two USB-A ports are located at the back of the central console

Pros and Cons

Cons: Challenging tailgate design

Tank 300 Exterior

The GWM Tank 300 measures 4,760mm in length, 1,930mm in width, and 1,903mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,750mm.

The GWM Tank 300 sports a bold, upright stance reminiscent of classic off-road SUVs. The wide rectangular grille is adorned with horizontal gloss black slats. It houses the centrally-positioned Tank logo between dual projector headlamps. The car gets all-around LED lighting. The circular headlights are complemented by a unique horizontal daytime running light (DRL) bar that stretches across the front. The robust front bumper, finished in black, integrates rounded fog lamps within rectangular housings at its corners. It enhances the SUV's rugged appearance.

The GWM Tank 300 's side profile showcases its muscular design, characterized by squared-off lines and pronounced wheel arches. These arches are accentuated by black cladding that extends along the lower body panels. The SUV rides on 18-inch chrome alloy wheels. The wheels are wrapped in all-terrain tires suitable for diverse driving conditions. Additional features include black-finished door handles, side mirrors, and roof rails. The side steps facilitate easier ingress and egress.

At the back, the GWM Tank 300 gets a tailgate-mounted full-size spare wheel, enclosed in a gloss black semi-cover. Vertically aligned taillights flank the rear. It mirrors the design cues of the front headlights. The square rear bumper incorporates skid plates and tow hooks, emphasizing the vehicle's off-road readiness. The combined average ranges from 6.8 to 10.4kmpl, depending on driving conditions and styles. Even by SUV standards, the GWM Tank 300 isn’t exactly a fuel-efficient car. But it gets an 80-litre fuel tank

Pros and cons

Pros: large fuel tank

Cons: Limited mileage

Tank 300 Ride & Handling

Built on a ladder-frame chassis, the GWM Tank 300 is mounted on a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension setup. This configuration provides a firm yet balanced ride, effectively absorbing road imperfections and offering stability during various driving conditions. But the suspension can feel a bit floaty at times, with noticeable body roll during sharp turns. Additionally, under heavy braking, the vehicle may exhibit a pronounced nose-dive.

On uneven or rough roads, the ride can become jittery, particularly at higher speeds. While the suspension effectively handles larger obstacles, it may transmit smaller road imperfections into the cabin.

Off-road, the GWM Tank 300 excels, with its suspension soaking up bumps and providing a comfortable experience over challenging terrains.

The SUV is equipped with a dual-zone automatic climate control system, ensuring both front and rear passengers experience optimal comfort. Rear air vents enhance airflow to the back seats, and a PM2.5 air filtration system helps maintain air quality within the cabin.

Pros: Effective climate control

Cons: Ride sometimes get bumpy

GWM Tank 300 Engine & Fuel Consumption

The GWM Tank 300 is equipped with a turbocharged, four-cylinder, 2.0-liter petrol engine that produces 217PS/380Nm. The motor is paired with an eight-speed, all-wheel-drive automatic transmission (AT). The AT shifts seamlessly, contributing to a relaxed driving experience. But the engine may feel slightly underpowered when the vehicle is fully loaded.

Despite its substantial size, the GWM Tank 300 is surprisingly agile in urban environments. The light steering and responsive handling make it easy to navigate through city streets and tight spaces. The vehicle's elevated driving position provides excellent visibility, enhancing driver confidence in congested area.

On highways, the GWM Tank 300 maintains a stable and composed demeanor. But at higher speeds, the vehicle's boxy structure contributes to noticeable wind noise, particularly around the side mirrors and A-pillar.

Pros and cons

Pros: City navigability

Cons: Highway wind noise

Tank 300 Braking & Safety

The GWM Tank 300 is equipped with a 360-degree surround-view camera that provides a bird's-eye view of the vehicle's surroundings. The transparent chassis function utilizes underbody cameras to display the terrain beneath the vehicle. The front and rear parking sensors assist in detecting obstacles.

The GWM Tank 300 comes with a robust driver-assist system. It comprises autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic sign recognition. There’s also a driver attention monitoring system that detects signs of fatigue or inattention.

The SUV also gets multiple airbags, rear parking sensors, and in-cabin child seat anchors

Pros and cons

Pros: Comprehensive safety suite

Cons: Limited customization options

GWM Tank 300 Verdict

Competitor Comparison

The Jeep Wrangler is a close competitor of the GWM Tank 300 in the Malaysian market. Both offer rugged off-road capability but cater to slightly different customers. The GWM Tank 300, priced lower, features a luxurious, tech-rich interior with advanced driver-assist features, making it a refined daily SUV. The 2.0L turbocharged powertrain balances performance and comfort. The Jeep Wrangler emphasizes raw off-road heritage with solid axles, removable panels, and superior articulation, but at a higher price. While the Wrangler excels in hardcore terrain, the Tank 300 offers better value, comfort, and practicality for urban and mild adventure use. Both are iconic in their own right.

Conclusion and Final Verdict

The GWM Tank 300 blends rugged off-road capability with modern luxury and advanced tech, making it a standout choice for adventurous drivers. While not without flaws, it offers impressive value and character in Malaysia’s growing lifestyle SUV segment.
