Proton to gradually restart production from May 5

KUALA LUMPUR: The government on Labour Day announced the reopening of almost all business activities and economic sectors from May 4. Known as the conditional movement control order (CMCO), the business will resume operation subject to tight standards and condition and operating procedures - PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said to the nation in his special Labour Day address,

Following the CMCO announcement, Proton revealed its plan to gradually resume operations starting 5th May - covering both production and sales. Prior to this, the automaker temporarily suspended all its operations on 18th March to meet the government’s movement control order directives.

For starters, the national automaker is aiming to resume its sales and service centres from tomorrow. However, this applies to the ones located in the yellow and green zone. Also, as directed by the authorities, all outlets and employees will be subjected to strict safety protocols to curb the transmission of coronavirus.

Proton chief executive officer Li Chunrong said, “Proton will begin the gradual resumption of all its business activities. However, the safety of our customers and employees is our main priority, and in-line with the prime minister’s calls to adopt a ‘new normal’, we will introduce a new set of protocols in all areas”.

In addition to the opening to sales and service centres, Proton’s Centre of Excellence corporate office will resume operations via online means. Also, new practices will be adopted by the carmaker to minimise contact and reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19.

Automaker also revealed that it would reopen its Shah Alam and Tanjung Malim plants from 5th May 2020.
