Recent Updates of Jaguar XF

The current generation Jaguar XF made its global debut at the 2015 New York International Auto Show. In the very next year, Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia launched the car in two different variants - XF Prestige and XF R-Sport.

Speaking of designing, some of the styling cues are taken from the smaller XE model. It gets slim headlights, F-Type-inspired rear end and prominent front grille. The car comes with Bi-Xenon headlamps having LED J-Blade daytime running lights.

Inside the cabin, there is a new quad-core InControl Touch Pro infotainment system, which consists of an eight-inch touchscreen. It is further accompanied by a five-inch instrument panel display having analogue dials.

Both the variants are equipped with a 2.0-litre i4 turbocharged direct-injected petrol mill, which is capable of providing a maximum power of 240 PS along with a peak torque of 340 Nm. Having the Jaguar Sequential Shift, an eight-speed electronic automatic gearbox takes care of the transmission responsibilities.

Overview

Jaguar has since long been a statement of aristocracy, power and has British written all over it. Taking its legacy further, the new Jaguar XF was launched in 2007 replacing the Jaguar S-type. XF is the entry level 4-door mid size luxury sedan and comes with the lowest price tag in the line-up ( Till the time Jaguar XE is not launched), however, being a Jaguar there is nothing too modest in this “entry-level” luxury. The looks have a sporty spirit in them without compromising on the elegance of the brand. The headlamps resembles the eye of a cat and makes it look like a mean machine. The interiors are also roomy and supportive and can comfortably seat five passengers including the driver. In a very posh, contemporary yet futuristic cabin Jaguar XF houses a 7-inch touchscreen display (Housing 3D navigation) which ensures proper infotainment and some really handy features which add exponentially to the comfort of the car.

The Jaguar XF comes in 3 ranges namely XF, XFS and XFR incorporating 5 variants in total each with a different engine, 3 out of which are petrol and the remaining 2 diesel. The 3 petrol engines are a 2.0-litre inline-4 turbocharged engine, a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine and a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine which churn out 240hp, 340hp and 510hp maximum power output respectively, whereas the 2 diesel engines are 2.2-litre inline-4 turbocharged and a 3-litre Twin turbo V6 engine which knock out a maximum power output measuring 200hp and 275hp respectively. These numbers are evidence of the fact that Jaguar has gone all out in making this entry level Jaguar a competitively priced sports car. The top speed of all the V engines is electronically limited at 250kmph. The XFR however is capable of doing much more. Talking of efficiency, the 2.2-litre is the most efficient diesel engine, with an efficiency of an impressive 19.6kmpl. Among the petrol engines, the 2.0-litre inline 4 offers an efficiency of 11.2 kmpl which is slightly low for a 2.0-litre engine, but understandably so because of the kerb weight of this Jaguar Beast. The aggressive looks combined with the luxurious interior and a performance packed 5.0-litre engine makes the Jaguar XF a perfect car to race in luxury, albeit with a sky rocketing price.

Interior & Features

The interiors are suave and high on functionality. The dash can be chosen from widely available options according to preference. The Jaguar Drive selector has Halo Illuminators that illuminates the drive switches and panels on the console. The seats are bulky and look supremely comfortable and spacious. The central console houses a 7-inch touchscreen display that provides the driver with all the navigational informations as well as outputs from the cameras along with serving as a source of entertainment. The use of chrome on the dash as well as the gear knob look classy and a rich feeling to the cabin. Three spoked steering looks dressed in luxury due to its leather covering and shiny buttons that serve various functions like audio controls. The cabin has been kept glowing and never fails to lift up the mood of the occupants.

Interior Comfort:

As far as comfort is concerned, XF goes out of its way to comfort the passengers. The width of the car provides for ample space for all the three passengers on the rear row that looks comfortable enough to sleep on them. The multi link suspension on the rear wheel makes the ride comfortable and long journeys are no problem in the XF. The steering wheel also has most needed controls embedded in it to give the driver easy access to all the functions. The 7-inch screen embedded with 3D Navigation features makes reversing an easy job. The seats are all 3-way adjustable that lets you choose your own preferences and save it with the help of the memory function. The air conditioning is also dual zone automatic that keeps the temperature ambient for both the front and rear rows.

Interior Measurements:

The interiors of the XF is very spacious. There is no lack of head and leg room on both front and rear rows. The storage space is also no less and the boot space stands at a generous 500-litres which is enough for our daily chores as well as long journeys.

Stereo and Accessories:

The standard stereo system varies as per the models of the XF range. The XF and the diesel XFS gets get 250 W Jaguar Sound system. The XFS petrol variant gets an upgraded 380W Meridian Sound system as standard. However, the XFR gets a special treatment. Although the rumbling of the engine is in itself a brilliant sound to hear, but still to listen to some actual music, it comes with a top end 825 Watt Meridian sound system that fills the entire cabin with crystal clear sounds. The 7-inch display on the console also serves as a great source of entertainment for all the passengers. This system is compatible with CD/DVD, MP3, iPod, AUX and also comes with Bluetooth connectivity.

Exterior

Jaguar has kept the exteriors of the XF very simple and sophisticated. There is nothing fancy about the body curves as well as the nose. The eyes of the XF look like they mean business and the R badge on the 5.0-litre XFR seriously adds to its attitude. The front mesh nose grille is broad and has a great street presence of its own. The headlights are sleeker and the front bumper air curtains get a chrome underlining that adds a touch of luxury to it. The front headlamps come with a Bi-function Xenon headlamps along with day time running lights arranged in “J blade” formation. The rear lamps also carry a special appeal of their own extending from just above the rear fenders to the boot lid in a fresh looking design. The XFR however gets a special treatment. The front grille is black mesh instead of the usual chrome and the R badge pretty much everywhere. The bumpers also get air intake curtains and louvers which have “supercharged” written on them, shamelessly flaunting all the grunt hidden inside the hood. The windscreen has road sensing wipers and the side rear view mirror are heated and electronically adjustable that makes it easy to access as well as efficient in fog and mist conditions. Overall, the car holds its own on the road and walks the talk.

Exterior Measurements:

All the variants of Jaguar XF house overall dimensions measuring 4961mm x 1877 mm x 1460 mm which makes for smooth looks and efficient aerodynamics. The wheelbase of the XF is 2909mm with short overhangs that makes up for brilliant handling.

Wheels:

The standard size of alloys on the XF is 18-inch whereas on the XFS, it is 19-inch that look graceful but the XFR gets hold of huge 20-inch alloys that efficiently cater to the needs of the 5.0-litre V8 engine. The tyre dimensions of the XF is 245/45 ZR 18.

Mileage Running Cost

One doesn't really expect much variable price economy when it comes to luxury segment, but still Jaguar XF (especially the diesel variants) fare pretty well in this segment as well. The mileage of the 2.2-litre diesel engine is the best measuring 19.6 kmpl where as the most efficient petrol engine from among the lot is the 2-litre inline4 that offers an efficiency of 11.2kmpl which is slightly low. The 5-litre XFR V8 literally drinks fuel with an efficiency of just 8.6 kmpl which is however justifiable with the 5.0-litre capacity and 510hp power of the engine.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The engine of the XFR puts many entry level sports car to shame. The 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 packs a punch and knocks out a boastful 510hp and a max torque of 625Nm, putting its competition to rest, successfully. The 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol engine of XFS also has an impressive 340hp worth of power, whereas the diesel version of the same size gets a power of 275hp which is decent for a diesel engine along with a great torque of 600Nm. The 2.2-litre diesel engine of the XF has a 200hp engine whereas the XF 2.0-litre petrol churns 240hp with a torque of 340Nm. The transmission on the XF is an 8-speed automatic with Jaguar Sequential Shift that makes the power transmission smooth and efficient.

Power:

The XFR has one of the most powerful engine in this price range, a 5.0-litre super charged V8, that churns a massive 510 hp maximum power along with a wonderful torque of 625Nm. The 3.0-litre V6 Diesel in the XFS offers an appreciable 275hp of power along with 600Nm of torque.

Acceleration and pick up:

The XFR 5.0-litre does 0-100kmph in just 4.9 seconds which is an achievement for a 4 door sedan that has such an heavy weight. Its top speed is an electronically limited 250Kmph which is much less than what its capable of. The 2.2-litre diesel is the slowest of the lot as it does 0-100 in 8.5 seconds with a top speed of 225 kmph which is not too bad either. The 2.0-litre petrol touches the 100kmph mark in 7.9 seconds and has a top speed of 240kmph. The petrol and diesel V6, both have an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph, with acceleration in 5.9 sec and 6.4 sec to 100 kmph respectively.

Braking & Safety

As such, Jaguar XF comes packing with ventilated disc brakes both on the front and rear wheels which is necessary for all the performance oriented cars assisted with ABS and EBD to aid in emergency conditions. The suspension system on the XF is of Double Wishbone type on front where as of Multi Link type on the rear wheels. These suspensions do a fine job at maintaining a comfortable ride in the car and also ensure proper handling on turns and corners.

Safety and Security:

Jaguar XF comes packing with Airbags for all the passengers including a dual stage airbag for the driver and front passenger. It also has a blind spot monitoring system that never leaves any unseen spot on the road for the driver. The pedestrian contact sensor makes the car safe for the occupants as well as the people outside the vehicle. Apart from these exquisite features it also has the Dynamic Stability Control, Traction control, Cornering brake control and engine drag torque control to make for a safe and sound ride. For security purpose it has an immobilizer and alarm system.

My first performance luxury sedan was a very important choice for me to make. I have always loved Jaguar cars for their distinct character and the XF was the car I ended up buying. It may not have all the gadgets that the German rivals possess, but for me, it was more about driving dynamics and feel good factor. The Read More
