Lexus IS Review 2024

Introduction

Lexus, the luxury car division of renowned automobile manufacturer Toyota came out shining with a series of entry level luxury cars in 1998 under the marque Lexus IS. The car was refined with various enhancements and was revealed in its second generation in the year 2006, however, it received a full re-design in 2014, completely shying away from their usual conservative looks. Earlier, the IS was sold under the nameplate of Toyota Altezza in the Japanese market. The Lexus IS goes in its own way in the compact executive saloon class, with angular styling that takes some of its inspiration from the LFA supercar. Now the car is all set to attract a potential number of luxury car buyers in Malaysia.

Engine, mileage and variants

Lexus IS is being offered in Malaysia with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder DOCH In-line 4  Dual VVT-i petrol engine which generates a maximum power of 241 bhp at 5800 rpm along with a maximum torque of 350 Nm between 1650- 5400 rpm. This power is transferred to the front wheel owing to its Electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) improving both performance and daily-driving comfort. The IS takes only 7.0 seconds to clock 100 kmph mark on the speedometer and accelerates until it reaches a top speed of 230 kmph. Owing to its next gen fuel efficient hybrid technologies, the Lexus IS delivers a decent fuel economy of 14.4 Kmpl.

Exteriors

The Lexus IS is one of the finest piece of work from the house of Lexus, when it comes to the exteriors of the car. Lexus IS gives another definition to the aerodynamics in the executive sedans today. With its angular styling the IS takes its inspiration from the LFA supercar. The most noticeable piece of design on the Lexus IS is the "Spindle Grille" at the front of the car. The front fascia of the car is further added with innovative mix of angles including various sweeps and lines. The car  is introduced first time with a unique set of newly designed daytime running lights in L-shape that are placed independently just below the exterior headlight cluster, making this car instantly recognizable. The IS measures out to be 4665 mm x 1810 mm x 1430 mm (L x W x H) with a judicious wheelbase of 2800 mm.

Interiors

Move inside the all-new IS and revive your senses with ultimate luxury. Lexus has worked at its best to provide high quality interior materials that looks and feel more refined. The seats are well-bolstered, still comfortable offering more rear space. The car offers a smaller trunk though, measuring out to be only 390 litres which is quite low in this segment. Besides that the 2015 Lexus IS offers a strong set of standard equipment, including an audio system with eight speakers, a 7-inch screen (MMI Navigation), CD player and radio with HD Radio capability, MP3/WMA/USB and iPod handling, voice recognition, and streaming audio via Bluetooth 3.0. Other standard features include power accessories, manual-tilt steering wheel, 60/40 split folding rear seats, programmable electronic settings memory, and electro-chromatic mirrors.

Safety, Braking and Miscellaneous

Lexus IS comes with a standard  set of safety equipment which includes a pack of 10 airbags, with driver's and front passenger's knee airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, and the usual side and frontal airbags. The all new IS can be brought to halt from a high speed in a small time span owing to its power assisted ventilated disc brakes with brakes assist. The car is loaded with various next gen features like, Vehicle stability and traction control, ABS along with EBD, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and an energy-absorbing crash structure. The Japanese car maker also offers optional safety features like rear cross-traffic alert, dynamic radar-based cruise control, lane departure warning, park assist, and a back-up camera.

Verdict

The Lexus IS can be summed up as a premium saloon offering exceptionally comfortable ride with impressive safety aspects and excellent performance. However, for the features offered the drive seems little over priced especially when competing against the German big guns of luxury like the BMW 3-series, Mercedes Benz C-Class and Audi A4.
