Recent Updates of Proton Ertiga

The latest model of the Proton Ertiga was launched by the company in August 2018. Called the Eritga Xtra, this new model is available in three variants - Executive MT, Executive AT, and Premium AT - with a starting price of RM 56,773 for the base model. The new Ertiga Xtra is a bit expensive than the previous model but it also comes with a few new added features like a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

However, the powerplant of the MPV remains the same - a 1.4-litre petrol engine that produces 91 hp at 6000 rpm and 130 Nm at 4000 rpm. You get an option of a 5-speed manual transmission or  4-speed automatic gearbox. From the safety point of view, the Proton Ertiga comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, reverse sensor, and ISOFIX child seat anchors on the second row.

In 2016, Suzuki stopped selling their cars in the country. Suzuki showrooms are now consolidated with Proton. This not only gave Proton the additional market presence through their 29 showrooms but also allowed Proton to launch 4 vehicles in the same year in 2017. The Ertiga slots itself snugly, right under the C-segment Exora. It also sells almost unchanged from the form that it comes in. Other than a few proton badges and some other cosmetic changes, the engineers from Proton have not settled with the MPV at all. Competing against the Perodua Alza, Honda BR-V, and the Nissan Grand Livina among others, this B segment MPV is available in three variants. There are the manual and automatic versions of the Executive and the Executive Plus which is only available as an automatic. The price ranges from RM 53773 to RM 59278 after a recent price reduction. There is already a new version of the Ertiga that is new for 2019, but it is yet to appear on Malaysian shores.

Interior & Features

Speaking of interior space, passengers in the first two rows have nothing to worry about. The third row, however, is only really meant for short people. They do however fold flat and are 50:50 split foldable making them good for storage. The second row is also 60: 40 foldable, fold flat and can slide to create more leg room. Rear passengers get their own roof-mounted air conditioner vents that use recirculated air but have their own cooling coils. The interior is actually directly lifted from the Swift and has a nice and rich feel to it. NVH levels are also manageable. There are a few niggles though. This car only has six seat belts but is meant to seat 7. The interior also only comes in beige which has to be one of the most boring colors ever. There aren’t many gadgets to play around with either. All variants are equipped with the same 2DIN infotainment system with iPhone connectivity and 4 speakers. Still, it is practical with two power outlets, a driver seat that is height adjustable and steering wheel in the Executive Plus with mounted controls for audio. In conclusion, the interior does a good enough job of seating 6 in comfort in a refined cabin.

Underneath the Ertiga lies the extended skeleton of the Suzuki Swift. It measures 4265 mm in length, 1695 mm in width and 1685 mm in height with a wheelbase length of 2740 mm. These dimensions make it about the same size as the Alza and slightly bigger than the Toyota Avanza. There is good amount of ground clearance at 185 mm. It rides on 15” wheels with 185/65 tires all around. Other than electrically folding mirrors and chrome front fog lamp surround on the top of the range Executive Plus, all three cars are exactly alike from the outside. But let’s face it, it’s not winning any beauty awards either way. The only stylistic element would be the chrome grille in the front and the chrome lip in the rear. There are no LED headlamps or DRLs. It is still a handsome shape that does not pretend to be anything that it isn’t. The tiny wheels, however, look like the wheels on a strolley. But perhaps bigger wheels would eat into the interior space.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

As you might have expected the engine also comes from the Swift. It’s the 1.4-litre K14B 4 cylinder 16 valve DOHC with multi-point fuel injection. The power plant is good enough for 91 hp at 6000 rpm and 130 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. All three variants get the same engine and the only choice is in between the 5-speed manual or the 4-speed automatic for the base model. While the power might not exactly be exciting, the mileage figure is. It was tested by the company under the New European Driving cycle and came out with 16.67 kmpl for the automatic and 17.5 kmpl for the manual. These numbers are enough to make the Ertiga a certified Energy Efficient vehicle. With careful driving, these numbers can go even higher. Like any Suzuki, driving the Ertiga is a pleasant experience. The drive is - again you know it’s coming - much like the Swift. Although with a bit more body roll due to the extra height and length. Despite this, it can be driven at high speeds reaching 150 kmph on the highways confidently. The engine despite producing such a low amount of power never struggles to deliver. Even at full capacity. The suspension also does a bang up job of keeping everyone inside comfortable.

Braking & Safety

The car comes with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD and ISOFIX. Yes, the list is only that long and there is no option of stability control either. This gives the Ertiga a not so great ASEAN NCAP rating of only 4 stars. In today’s world, this safety rating will not be appreciated by many when compared to the competition. There is, however, a reverse sensor that lets you park safely. But even then things like anti-trap power windows are only available on the Executive Plus and that too on the driver side window only.

I am a family man and love to take weekend trips with my family of seven. We always had issues when we had to take two cars, it was then that my co-partner suggested that I buy the Proton Ertiga. The finishing of this car is pretty good

I really liked this 7 seater because I have got a large family, we go out every weekend and I have a bit of a hobby for long drives. The spacious leg rooms are really helpful for long drives, the engine is so silent that it doesn’t feel like it's on sometimes, really impressive! Next, the mileage is pretty decent Read More

I don’t have a huge craze for powerful cars and don’t see myself driving one that soon.
