100,000th car rolled out of Mercedes-Benz Pekan plant
KUALA LUMPUR: Finally, the Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Pekan assembly plant in Pahang has touched the six-figure milestone. Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic sedan is the 100,000th car to have come out of the company’s production facility. Also, the year 2019 marks the 15th anniversary of the Pekan assembly plant.
A total of 13 variants from five models have emerged from the company’s local production unit. Included in the list are the S-Class sedans, C-Class, E-Class, GLC Coupe and SUV, and two Mercedes-AMG models - the GLC 43 and the C 43.
Since 2014, a total of RM 300 million has been invested in this 339,000 sq m plant that has been built on 895,000 sq m of land. It was only recently that the plant got an extension in the form of technological upgrades, the plant is now fully-equipped, and the operation commenced in just two weeks. Apart from producing local models, it has also started the assembly of the left-hand drive Mercedes-Benz C 180 Avantgarde sedan for the Philippines market.
Claus Weidner, president, and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia said, “As we set to expand our production volumes, we have undertaken technological upgrades at our plant to enhance our ability to cater to a more robust product portfolio and contribute towards an increased market share of Mercedes-Benz vehicles locally and regionally.”
Further, Weidner said that it was more feasible for the brand to commence the export of the left-drive model for the Philippines market than to establish a plant in the country itself.
