2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R appear at the Chicago Auto Show

KUALA LUMPUR: Several automakers have put up their new cars on display at the 2021 Chicago Auto Show and one of them is Volkswagen who introduced its new Mk8 Golf GTI and Golf R. The hot hatch duo received interior upgrades and performance-oriented revisions for the 2022 model year. So, let’s know their details one by one, starting with the GTI.

Available in three different trims -S, SE, and Autobahn, the new Mk8 Golf GTI is fitted with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates a maximum power output of 241 hp and a peak torque of 340 Nm. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission as standard that sends power to the front wheels. A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is also on offer. 

Standard equipment list of the VW Golf GTI includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, an 8.25-inch infotainment system, a seven-speaker sound system, and 30-colour ambient lighting. However, the features available on the higher trims comprise a 10-inch infotainment display, wireless App-Connect, Wi-Fi connectivity, a nine-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system, automatic high beams, 12-way adjustable driver seat, and so on.

Moving to the new Volkswagen Golf R, the hot hatch also has a 2.0-litre turbo mill like its cousin but here we notice a different state of tune that makes the engine deliver 315 hp and 400 Nm torque. It also gets two transmission options to choose from, viz a DSG and a six-speed manual transmission.

The new Golf R gets performance-oriented upgrades in the form of adaptive dampers and 14-inch drilled brake rotors. The latter also features blue calipers. Inside the cabin, the important inclusions are a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, head-up display, a 10-inch infotainment system with navigation, sunroof, and Nappa leather-upholstered seats. 

The 2022 Golf GTI and Golf R will hit the U.S. showrooms in Q4 2021. The price for the Golf GTI S MT starts at $29,545 (RM 124,218), while the new Golf R MT retails at $43,645 (RM 183,500).
