Aston Martin first to launch Apple CarPlay Ultra, rivals Google’s In-Car systems

KUALA LUMPUR: Aston Martin has claimed the title as the first car manufacturer in the world to introduce Apple CarPlay Ultra, rolling out the next-gen interface across its latest models and setting a new benchmark for in-car smartphone integration.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Which carmaker is the first in the world to introduce Apple CarPlay Ultra?
Aston Martin is the first manufacturer globally to offer Apple CarPlay Ultra, starting with new orders of the DBX, DB12, Vantage, and Vanquish in the USA and Canada. How does Apple CarPlay Ultra compare to Google-based in-car systems?
CarPlay Ultra rivals Google’s native infotainment systems—like those in the Volvo EX90, Polestar 2, and Renault Megane E-Tech—by offering deep integration with vehicle displays, including the instrument cluster, and allowing full control of media, navigation, and even car functions through a familiar iOS-style interface. This new system goes beyond the conventional CarPlay layout. CarPlay Ultra extends the interface not just to the central touchscreen, but also to the fully digital instrument cluster, giving drivers a familiar iOS-style layout across multiple displays.

Navigation, media, and widgets can be arranged to suit driver preferences—right down to custom themes, colours, and gauge designs.

The updated system is already available as standard on all new Aston Martin DBX, Vantage, DB12, and Vanquish orders in the United States and Canada.
Existing owners of models equipped with the brand’s next-gen infotainment system will receive the update in the coming weeks. A global rollout is expected over the next 12 months.

Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark commented:
“Aston Martin is delighted to have collaborated with Apple, and to be first to launch CarPlay Ultra. As a brand, our focus on world-leading performance goes beyond the traditional attributes associated with powertrains, dynamic performance and craftsmanship.
The integration of CarPlay Ultra is a clear example of the dedication to collaborate with the best companies in the world to bring unique experiences and in-vehicle capabilities to our customers.”
CarPlay Ultra introduces the ability to control vehicle functions like climate settings and media playback using Siri, touch, or physical controls, while also integrating Apple widgets directly onto Aston Martin’s 10.25-inch touchscreen and instrument panel.
It’s also highly customisable, allowing users to personalise the look and layout to match their preferences.

The interface is part of Aston Martin’s push into high-end in-car tech, following the launch of its in-house developed infotainment system last year in the DB12.
The bespoke setup supports full online connectivity and blends gesture-capable touchscreen controls with traditional switches for functions like gear and drive mode selection, chassis control, and exhaust settings.
While Apple has long offered CarPlay, this latest version feels like a direct challenge to Android-based infotainment systems powered by Google—which have been gaining traction in recent years.
Cars like the Volvo EX90, Polestar 2, and Renault Megane E-Tech already feature native Google integration with Google Maps, Google Assistant, and access to the Play Store baked directly into the car’s OS.

Apple’s move with CarPlay Ultra signals a strong push to retain relevance in the digital cockpit space. As Bob Borchers, Apple’s VP of Worldwide Product Marketing, put it:
“iPhone users love CarPlay and it has changed the way people interact with their vehicles. With CarPlay Ultra, together with automakers we are reimagining the in-car experience and making it even more unified and consistent. We are thrilled to begin rolling out CarPlay Ultra with Aston Martin, with more manufacturers to come.”
For now, Aston Martin leads the way—but with the interface requiring iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 18.5 or later, it’s a feature squarely aimed at the tech-savvy premium segment.

The digital dash wars are heating up—and Aston Martin, for once, isn’t just bringing the thunder from under the hood.
While CarPlay Ultra debuts in a luxury vehicle like Aston Martin's DBX, Vantage, DB12, and Vanquish models, Apple has announced plans to expand the system to more affordable vehicles.
Automakers such as Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are among those committed to offering CarPlay Ultra in the future. This indicates that CarPlay Ultra is not exclusive to high-end cars and will become available in a broader range of vehicles over time.
