Malaysia’s No.1 EV gets greener, Proton e.MAS 5 Jade Green debuts in Penang

KUALA LUMPUR: The Proton e.MAS 5 is getting a new colour option, with PRO-NET showing the EV in Jade Green at the Penang Autoshow 2026.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is new with the Proton e.MAS 5 at Penang Autoshow 2026?

The Proton e.MAS 5 is being shown in a new Jade Green exterior colour at the Penang Autoshow 2026.
  • Can visitors test drive the Proton e.MAS models at Penang Autoshow 2026?

Yes, visitors can test drive the Proton e.MAS 5, Proton e.MAS 7 and Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV from 1 to 3 May 2026.
  • The new shade gives the e.MAS 5 a slightly fresher and more youthful look, and it comes at a time when the model is already carrying strong momentum for Proton’s EV push. According to PRO-NET, the Proton e.MAS 5 is currently Malaysia’s No.1 EV model, with more than 8,000 units delivered year-to-date in 2026.

At the Penang Autoshow 2026, the Jade Green Proton e.MAS 5 is being displayed alongside the recently introduced Emerald Green Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV, giving visitors a look at both sides of the Proton e.MAS line-up, one fully electric, the other plug-in hybrid.

More importantly, the e.MAS 5’s strong delivery numbers show that Proton’s EV sub-brand is no longer sitting in the “early curiosity” phase. The car has already found its way into a sizeable number of Malaysian homes, and the addition of Jade Green gives buyers another option beyond the usual safe colours.

Mr. Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of PRO-NET said: “As Malaysia’s No.1 EV brand, we are driving wider EV adoption by making the technology more accessible and easier to understand.

The new Jade Green Proton e.MAS 5 strengthens our lineup with greater choice for customers, while the introduction of the GMA platform in Northern Malaysia enables more Malaysians to experience EV technology firsthand and clearly understand how it differs from conventional ICE vehicles.”

Proton e.MAS holds 64.2% EV market share in Northern Malaysia

Northern Malaysia is also becoming an important market for Proton e.MAS. PRO-NET says the brand recorded a 64.2% EV market share year-to-date in March 2026 in the northern region.

That is a strong figure, especially for a part of Malaysia where EV adoption is being helped by a few practical factors. One of them is the higher number of landed homes, which makes home charging easier to install and live with compared to high-rise living.

Public charging infrastructure is also growing, helping reduce the usual concerns around EV ownership, especially for buyers who need more than just daily city driving.

Proton e.MAS test drives available at Penang Autoshow 2026

Visitors to the Penang Autoshow 2026 can test drive the full Proton e.MAS line-up from 1 to 3 May 2026. The available models include the Proton e.MAS 5, Proton e.MAS 7 and Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV.

PRO-NET is also running the Proton e.MAS Golden Test Drive Campaign, which runs from 13 April to 17 May 2026. The campaign carries the theme “30 Gold Bars in 30 Days”, with a total of 30 units of 3g gold bars to be given away over five weeks.

To take part, customers need to visit a participating showroom, test drive their preferred Proton e.MAS model, place a booking, and submit an entry through the form provided by the dealer.

    What is the GMA platform?

Also shown at the Penang Autoshow 2026 is PRO-NET’s Global Modular Architecture platform, or GMA. This should not be confused as a new model reveal on its own. Instead, it is the vehicle architecture that supports Proton’s current electrified models under the e.MAS line-up.

In simple terms, GMA is the base structure that allows Proton e.MAS cars to be built as EVs or PHEVs. It supports items such as the electric motor layout, battery packaging, body structure and chassis setup.

For the current Proton e.MAS range, the platform is relevant because it helps explain why the e.MAS 5, e.MAS 7 and e.MAS 7 PHEV are not just conventional petrol cars converted into electrified models.

These cars are built around an architecture designed with electrification in mind, including high-strength steel construction, integrated electric drive components and driving dynamics suited to EV and PHEV use.

For visitors at the show, the GMA display works more as an educational piece. The main attraction is still the Jade Green Proton e.MAS 5, but the platform display gives a useful look at what sits underneath Proton’s current EV and PHEV line-up.
