Proton's biggest month ever in Malaysia: 22,632 units moved in August 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has just posted the best sales month in its history. The national carmaker moved 22,632 units in August across domestic, export, Proton e.MAS and smart, which it describes as the highest monthly domestic sales volume the company has ever recorded and its strongest overall month since January 2010.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How many cars did Proton sell in August 2026?

Proton recorded 22,632 units in August 2026 across domestic sales, exports, Proton e.MAS and smart.
  • Was August 2026 Proton's best month ever?

Proton describes it as the highest monthly domestic sales volume in the company's history, and its best overall monthly performance since January 2010.
  • August was up 22.7% on July, and the eight-month tally now sits at 141,421 units, a 40.2% jump year-on-year. Based on forecast Total Industry Volume, Proton expects to have taken 27.9% market share for the month, lifting its year-to-date share to 25.6%.

Saga still doing the heavy lifting

The Saga remains the volume backbone with 7,347 units delivered in August. Its year-to-date total is now just under 60,000 units, 33.3% ahead of last year, and Proton expects it to clear 80,000 for the full year.

    S70 finally cracks 3,000 units

The S70 had its best month yet, with 3,235 units going to Malaysian buyers in August. That's the first time the C-segment sedan has passed 3,000 in a single month, and its year-to-date figure of 17,953 units already beats its entire 2025 total with four months still to run.

Proton puts the turnaround down to the updated 2026 model introduced in February. On the evidence of the numbers, that update did what it needed to do.

The X50 is still the year-to-date B-segment SUV leader and Malaysia's best-selling SUV, with 2,274 units sold in August. Proton says that keeps it ahead of last year's pace, though it doesn't give a percentage,.

The X90 managed 471 units. Proton says it leads the seven-seat D-segment SUV category and is 64% ahead of its 2025 result, while acknowledging in the same sentence that the total volume is comparatively small.

Proton e.MAS sets another record, and the e.MAS 5 is carrying it

The electrified side had its second record month in a row. Proton e.MAS delivered 6,047 units in August, taking its year-to-date total to 27,860 units, with Proton claiming all three models lead their respective segments.

The bulk of that came from one car. The e.MAS 5 posted 4,818 units, which Proton says is a new national record for monthly volume from a single EV model in Malaysia. It's also described as Malaysia's best-selling EV.

The other two sit a long way behind. The e.MAS 7 managed 613 units, while the e.MAS 7 PHEV hit 616 units as local assembly volume ramps up following the line-off ceremony held by the MITI Minister in July.

    Exports pass the full-2025 total

Proton exported 2,477 units in August, its highest monthly export volume since January 2011, bringing the year-to-date figure to 6,059 units. That's already ahead of the 6,000 units shipped in all of 2025, with more orders due before year end.

The engine behind this is Tanjong Malim. Proton has put money into a new powertrain plant, new stamping facilities and what it calls the country's first dedicated xEV assembly plant, and it now builds multiple Geely models there for export markets alongside its own domestic cars.

Commenting on the August performance, Dato' Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, PROTON, said: "By achieving the highest monthly domestic sales volume in PROTON's history, we have reached an important milestone that reflects the confidence customers place in our products and services. Our range continues to offer technology, design, quality, safety and performance, supported by a strong value proposition."

"At the same time, we are making strong gains in our export business, particularly in the area of assembling vehicles for our partner Geely, while on-going efforts by the Proton e.MAS team have resulted in the brand taking a dominant market share in the EV market and another record-setting month. As a result, PROTON is well-placed to reach its year-end volume and financial goals, benefitting the entire local automotive ecosystem as a whole."

On the EV side, Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of PRO-NET, said: "PRO-NET is humbled by the confidence Malaysians have in Proton e.MAS and our electrical mobility solutions, which is reflected in the continued high demand for all our models."

"As we continue with efforts to deliver units as quickly as possible, our expansion into areas such as partnering charge point operators (CPO) to grow charging infrastructure, growing the dealership network and continuing to engage owners on multiple levels ensure we are able to offer a holistic ownership experience making the transition to xEVs a smooth one for all buyers."

On exports, Abdul Rashid added: "PROTON assembling vehicles in Malaysia for Geely markets is one of the key focus areas key to growing export sales. These activities boost assembly line utilisation at the factory while contributing to increased volume for PROTON's vendors and contributing positively to Malaysia's balance of trade."
