Recent Updates of BMW 5 Series Sedan

BMW recently added 2 new variants in Malaysia to the 5 Series lineup to give a wider choice to customers. This makes a total of 4 variants to choose from. All variants are powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine in different states of tune. The 'e' variants are also assisted by an electric motor. An 8-speed Steptronic transmission is common across the board with the 530i M Sport having an upgraded 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. First up, we have the 520i Luxury (RM328,800) with 184 bhp and 290 Nm. 0-100 comes up in 7.8 seconds with a 235 kmph top speed. The 530e Sport (RM328,800) has a combined power output of 252 PS and 420 Nm. It accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 6.2 seconds and tops out at 235 kmph. The 530e M Sport has the same output as the 530e Sport but features M specific interior/exterior elements. Lastly, the 530i M Sport makes 252 bhp and 350 Nm. 0-100 kmph takes 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 250 kmph.

The German auto giant made a hustle in the Malaysian auto market by introducing its new masterpiece the BMW 5 Series. The brand is out with the tag line “Embodiment of Perfection”. And certainly you would accept it as soon as you have a glance to it. Bestowed with new form of styling, the Germans have not missed the chance of generating the oomph factor with the introduction of the acclaimed 5 Series. The lengthened hood, longer wheelbase and side lines, is all that which speaks about the luxury it is gifted with. Ravishing new head lamps engraved with LED, screams out the reason behind its elegant looks . L shaped design of the rear lamps adds to aesthetics giving it a sporty look. Leathered seats and the gleaming console all over the dash unit makes the cockpit feel no less than any mean machine. The center console leans towards the driver elegantly in such a way that the driver has to experience a minimal effort and gain the joy of driving. All new BMW 5 Series is available in three different variants depending on the engine type you go for- 528i, 520i and 520d. Four cylinder 1997 cc petrol engine of the 528i is capable of delivering a top speed of 250 km/h making it to attain speeds of 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds where as the 520i (petrol) and 520d (diesel) with top speeds 233 km/h and 231 km/h respectively does it in 7.9 seconds. The Twin-power Turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine in the 520i and 528i enables it to breath out a maximum power of 184 hp at 5000-6250 rpm and 245 hp at 5000-6500 rpm respectively where as the Twin-power 4-cylinder engine in the 520d grunts out 184 hp at 4000 rpm. Efficient dynamics of the much talked sedan bolstered it to gain a fuel economy of 16.12 km/l and 15.38 km/l in the 520i and 528i version whereas 22.22 km/l in the 520d version. Giving safety utmost priority, the brand has equipped a descent set of safety features like the ABS/EBD, stability control, airbag disable function and ISOFIX. In order to provide maximum comfort, couple of features like steering audio control, electric steering adjustment, auto start/stop functions are also equipped in the series.

Interior & Features

Leather tailored interior suits the way of styling as well as matches with the elegance of the equipments installed. The dusky tone of the dash surface gives a complete look to the interior. All the controls are arranged in such away that driver can have a easy access to it. The horizontal surface make the passengers enjoy a large amount of space. The longer wheelbase adds ample amount of legroom to the passengers as well as driver. Height of the car is good enough to accommodate a large figure of head room both at rear and front. Talking about the width, the car has sufficient figure to entertain a large shoulder room. The height of the car is good enough to place it among the most comfortable vehicle of its segment.

Interior Comfort:

To make it stand to the legacy of comfortableness, BMW has provided a plethora of features that include accessory power output, adjustable seats, rear seat headrest, rear seat arm rest, cup holders and seat lumber support. Multi-functional steering wheel and navigation system with voice control ensures pure driving pleasure. Apart from these common features, it also includes contact-less opening of the door and smart key. The instrument cluster include multi-functional instrument display in black panel technology with 10.2'' screen that offers a better visual presentation of the driving experience.

Interior Measurements:

The 4 door sedan with a seating capacity of 5 accommodates a sufficient head room of 1036 mm at the front and 973 mm at the rear. Due to its sufficient width it has a shoulder room of 1518 mm at the front and 1485 mm to the rear, giving its passengers a package of capaciousness.

Stereo and Accessories:

Bang & Olufsen high-end Surround Sound system in the new 5 series results a theatrical effect in the car. With its aluminum crafted-16 fully active loudspeakers, the car gets transformed to a concert hall.
This sound system features 5.1 Surround Sound with DSP distribution to all the 16 active loudspeakers. USB and auxillary inputs incorporated in the system allows you to access favorite list of songs. The 5 series comes with a connected drive service where you can connect your iPhone using snap-in adapter and manage you applications. It also comes with a BMW connected app where you can access your twitter and Facebook accounts. Bluetooth connectivity provided in the system enables hands free connections.


Built with perfection, the new 5 series comes with dynamic styling. The haunches at the bumper adds a wild look to the car. Lines all over the side flowing back to the fenders is the new addition to the segment. Signature double kidney grills with chrome finish is the effect that BMW never hesitates to add in any of its luxury sedans. Lengthened bonnets, short overhangs and long wheelbase is what makes the luring center. The curved LEDs at the front as well as to the rear gives a glossy finish to the series. The new LED head lamps are bit offset from the side end of bonnet giving it a masculine look. Optical depth and L shaped design of the rear lamps, makes it the most dominant car of the segment. The notched design at hood adds a crucial factor to the aerodynamics of the car. LED's engraved to ORVM gives an elegant look to the car.

Exterior Measurements:

The LXBXH of the 5 series dimensioning 4907mm X 2102mm X 1462mm is ample enough to make a good road presence. The most talked ground clearance has a figure of 142 mm whereas to provide maximum comfort the wheelbase is extended to 2968 mm.


The 18 inch light-alloy of the 520i has a tyre dimension of 245/45 R18 for both front and rear followed by 528i with tyre dimension of 245/45 R18 at front and 275/40 R18 at the rear. On the other hand, the 17 inch alloy of the 520d has a tyre dimension of 225/55 R17 for both front and rear.

Mileage Running Cost

BMW has equipped the new 5 Series with ECO PRO mode, that immensely contributes to the economic factor of this luxury sedan. Auto start/stop function in the car ensures that proper utilization of fuel. The 520i gains a mileage figure of 16.12 km/l followed by 528i with 15.38 km/l whereas the 520d does it in 22.22 km/l. All thanks to some advance features such as Brake energy Regeneration, the kinetic energy created when you apply brakes gets efficiently transmitted into electrical energy which in return takes the load-off from the engine and improves mileage.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The all new 5 series comes in both petrol as well as diesel variant. The 4-cylinder petrol engine has an amalgamation of a twin scroll turbocharger with valvetronic and high precision injection giving it a power of 245 hp at 5000-6500 rpm. On the other hand the 4- cylinder twin power turbo diesel engine churns out a maximum power of 184 hp at 4000 rpm. Transmission in the 5 series allows to switch between manual and automatic mode. The 8-speed sport automatic transmission of the 520i and 528i makes it to boost an overall torque of 270 Nm at 1250 rpm and 350 Nm at 1250 rpm respectively, whereas the 8-speed automatic transmission of the 520d makes it to reach a maximum torque of 380 Nm at 1750 rpm.


TwinScroll turbocharger with Valvetronic, double-VANOS and High Precision injection all in the same power house made a sufficient hike in the power. The powerful 2.0-litre Twin-power turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine of the 520i and 528i delivers a maximum power of 184 hp at 5000-6500 rpm with maximum torque of 270 Nm between 1250-4500 rpm and 245 hp at 5000-6250 rpm with maximum torque of 350 Nm between 1250-4800 rpm respectively. On the other hand the efficient 2.0-litre diesel engine of the 520d goes for 184 hp at 4000 rpm with a maximum torque of 380 Nm between 1750-2750 rpm.

Acceleration and Pickup:

Being blessed with greater power the 528i has a top speed of 250 km/h and touches 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds where as the 520i and 520d does it in 7.9 seconds. The sleek styling of the standard 520i and 520d made it to reach a top speed of 233 km/h and 231 km/h. The acceleration figures of the new 5 Series are quite impressive despite being a heavy sedan possessing unladen weight of 1700 kg.

Braking & Safety

The console at the center allows you to switch the desired driving mode, for example switch to ECO mode and you could get the pure driving pleasure at minimal wastage of fuel and if you are fond of speed then switch to sports mode. Switching to sports mode, you may find the engine more responsive and gear shift timing more precise and an alert handling. The brakes at front and rear are ventilated disc type. With double wishbone suspension at front and multi-link in the rear the ride became more stable.

Safety and Security:

Though providing a package of features BMW has not compromised with the safety of the vehicle. In order to place itself among the safest vehicles, the brand has added a couple of safety features in it namely- traction control, anti-lock braking system, driver airbag, passenger airbag, side airbag, brake assist and crash sensors both at rear and front. Central locking, smart access card entry, door ajar warning and engine immobilizer system equipped in the series adds to the security of the vehicle. To encounter sudden impacts, it is equipped with side impact beams and front impact beams. For easy driving at night, the sedan is packed with day and night rear view mirror, rear camera and automatic headlamps.
