Audi has trademarked a new vehicle name, the Q9
KUALA LUMPUR: Every luxury automaker nowadays has a large SUV and crossover in its lineup. Even the ultra-luxury marques like the Rolls-Royce and Bentley have one such model in their stable. However, Audi was the pioneer of this particular segment with models like the Q7 and Q8. But, recently, BMW launched an even bigger model, the X7 and Mercedes-Benz have the GLS.
To stay on top of the game, Audi has a perfect plan in place, indicated by the filling of a new trademark - the Q9. Going by the brand’s nomenclature, the trademarked name suggests an even larger crossover than the sizable Q7. Also, the filing of the name is dated 26 February 2020, which is relatively recent.
The Ingolstadt-brand was missing out on the full-sized luxury crossover segment lately. Mercedes-Benz first came out with its GL in 2006 and renamed it GLS in 2016. BMW followed the suite and introduced the X7 in 2018.
The reason why Audi didn’t immediately cash on the full-size crossover segment is perhaps because of the fellow Volkswagen Group member Bentley that makes the Bentayga. However, seeing the difference in the customer-base they serve, it is likely that introducing a Bentayga-size crossover won’t risk the sales of the Bentley car.
So far, no spy shots of the Q9 have emerged. Maybe the crossover is now in the development process, and we get a glimpse sometime in 2021 or early 2022. Also, the trademark registration could suggest that Audi wants to keep the name for itself.
Only time will tell whether Q9 will remain a name just on papers or a car will float with its badge out of the Audi plant. If the latter is true, it would be interesting to see how the Q9 gives competition to the long-running GLS and X7. Also, the way the two are selling in the key markets, the Q9 is definitely a good option for Audi.
