Audi PB18 e-tron debuts at Pebble Beach

KUALA LUMPUR: Electrification of cars is the future and Audi has taken this to a new level altogether by aiming to power its next-gen flagship supercars with electric energy. The German automaker has introduced a new electric supercar concept, the PB18 e-tron that’s spectacular in every sense. It is believed to be the future of high-performance e-cars that’ll rule tomorrow. The Audi PB18 e-tron packs a striking design, powerful all-electric powertrain, and unimaginable tech.

Audi PB18 e-tron front

The PB18 e-tron has been designed by Audi Design Loft under the leadership of Gael Buzyn who is also the Head of Audi Design Loft, Malibu, California. According to the master, the interiors of the new concept are inspired by a race car while focusing on making it practical for everyday drive. However, the outside design is a blend of classic race cars and modern, futuristic styling components.

While the front is dominated by the signature Singleframe grille, massive air intakes and matrix-inspired headlamps with LEDs, the side profile is governed by large wheel arches that pack 22-inch lightweight wheels, and fender flares. The PB18 e-tron is bolted on a lightweight chassis that includes aluminium and carbon composites. As a result, it tips the scales below 1,550 kg. Dimensionally, it measures 4,530 mm long, 2,000 mm wide and 1,150 mm high. It boasts a wheelbase of 2,700mm.

Audi PB18 e-tron side

The PB18 e-tron gets three electric motors, out of which one is positioned at the front while the other two get a position at the back. The motors situated at the back power the rear wheels separately. The setup is capable of producing a power output of 680 PS that can be bumped up to 775 for a short time during the drive and a peak torque of 830 Nm.

With such blistering force behind its back, the PB18 e-tron can travel from 0-100 kmph in about 2 seconds, making it faster than their LMP1 prototype. Additionally, there is a 95 kWh liquid-cooled battery pack that sports a travel range of over 500 km on a single charge. The battery pack takes about 15 minutes to get completely charged, thanks to its charging voltage of 800V. Audi says that it also comes with a wireless charging option.

Audi PB18 e-tron rear

The underpinnings on the Audi PB18 e-tron are inspired from the R18 e-tron Quattro's fittings. It gets lower and upper transverse control arms at the front as well as at the back that are common on the race cars. Additionally, it gets a push-rod axle and a pull-rod axle at the front and rear respectively with adaptive magnetic dampers. Braking on the PB18 e-tron concept is taken care of by the big carbon ceramic discs.

With the electrification of automobiles on the rise, big auto giants like Audi are busy working on the future of the electric-powered cars. The PB18 e-tron concept is an example of how brutal and powerful a full-electric drive can get. And this is just the beginning as we expect the future to be brighter, practical and liveable.
