Kuala Lumpur: The 2016 Proton Perdana was recently teased by Proton’s chairman Tun Dr Mahathir during an Alami Proton event in Shah Alam. Earlier, this D-Segment sedan was also featured in a Malaysian film named 'Filem Kapsul', but that time the automaker claimed it to be in a 'work in progress' stage and not the final design. But now the final form is previewed and is open to public this weekend. The current Perdana is just a rebadge of the eight-generation Honda Accord, but the new 2016 Proton Perdana has got a heavily revised exterior along with some major tweaks.

Tun Dr Mahathir revealed the front and rear portions of the car, thus showing the front fog lamp design and rear LED light cluster. The distinctive headlights contain a solid strip of LED Daytime running lights and could also feature the single projector bezel, as previously seen on the Iriz. The front fender panel appears to have smoother curves unlike the original Perdana. One can also notice a thick chrome strip running across the back and combining the tail lights. The exhaust pipe is also fully integrated into the rear bumper. The redesigned front door handle hints towards a possibility for keyless entry, a feature which is not present in the current Perdana. The covered car also revealed some design features like a teardrop-shaped glasshouse, shark-fin antenna, boot-lid spoiler, prominent wheel arches and sharp protrusions of the headlamps and tail-lamps. Dimension wise, it would measure 4,999 mm long, making it quite bigger than the original Accord which measures 4,849 mm long.

As for the interior, we would have to wait until the automaker reveals it. Under the hood, it would retain Honda's 2.0-litre R20A3 producing a maximum power of 154 hp along with a peak torque of 189 Nm and a 2.4-litre i-VTEC K24Z2 engine producing a maximum power of 177 hp and a peak torque of 222 Nm. Both the engines would be coupled with a five-speed automatic transmission. According to Proton CEO Datuk Abdul Harith Abdullah, it would be rolled out in the first quarter of 2016 and would be built in Proton’s Medium Volume Factory in Shah Alam, alongside the Exora MPV.
