2020 Toyota Supra receives its first TRD upgrade

KUALA LUMPUR: After launching the A90 GR Supra in the United States, the Toyota car has now been introduced in the land of the rising sun, Japan. However, here the car was not alone, as it was accompanied by a TRD version as well. As for the Malaysian market, we are expecting to get our hands on the new Supra later this year.

Compared to the standard performance models, the TRD version gets more aero parts, this includes carbon fibre reinforced plastic pieces that give the Supra a more aggressive stance. On the exterior, the TRD unit gets a new splitter at the front and rocker extensions with brand’s trademark ‘sakana’ stabilizer fins at the side. Also, included in the Supra TRD kit are outer rear view mirror covers, diffuser extension, and lip-style spoiler at the rear. This particular version runs on 19-inch aluminum wheels.

For the Japanese market, the Supra has been made available in three trims - SZ, SZ-R, and RZ. Unlike, the US-spec model, here the car is offered in two engine configurations, however, all the models share transmission and drivetrain specs, i.e., 8-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive, respectively.

The base SZ trim is powered by a B48 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder mill that churns out 197 PS at 4500 rpm and 320 Nm from 1450 to 4200 rpm. The mid-ranging SZ-R gets the same mill but its slightly retuned to develop 258 PS at 5000 rpm and 400 Nm at 4400 rpm. As for the top Supra model, the RZ, it houses a B58 3.0-litre engine sourced from BMW. This six-cylinder turbo engine cranks out a maximum power of 340 PS at 5000 rpm along with a peak torque of 500 Nm from 1600 to 4500 rpm.
