Meet the 'logical successor' of McLaren F1, the Gordon Murray T.50
KUALA LUMPUR: Gordon Murray is a living legend of the automotive world. He specialises in car design and engineering. As you can guess from the title, the icon himself has revealed his latest creation, dubbed as the T.50 supercar. Murray calls it "the purest, lightest, most driver-focused supercar ever built".
Wondering about the name 'T.50'? Well, the number 50 represents Murray's total design to date, including the T.50. Now, there are a lot of things interesting about this carbon-fibre, ultra-light, mid-engine three-seater, all of which we'll discuss below.
Gordon Murray T.50 design
- Murray himself has designed the T.50; he was the leader of the small yet capable design team
- Elements of its design take clues from the F1, like its compact size, roof-mounted air scoop, use of 'ticket windows', arrowhead front panel, and dihedral doors
- The rear end displays extreme functionality with elements like 400 mm fan, large exhausts, massive underbody diffuser, and business-like mesh for cooling the engine
Gordon Murray T.50 interior
- Compared to the F1, the T.50 displays a roomier cabin
- Access to the centre seat is easy as the floor is flat
- The analogue switchgear and instrumental panel are designed in jet fighter-style and is crafted to Swiss-watch quality
- A two side-mounted luggage compartment can be top-loaded and are as roomy as the found in F1
Gordon Murray T.50 performance
- The Murray designed supercar is powered by a new V12 mill with a displacement of 3,994cc.
- It makes a maximum power of 963 hp and is connected to a six-speed manual gearbox
- Further enhancing the supercar's performance are six aerodynamic modes - Auto, Braking, High Downforce, Test, Vmax, and Streamline.
- While the former two modes work automatically depending on the car's speed and driver's input, the high downforce mode is self-explanatory. The Streamline mode activates the aerodynamics mode by running the fan at full speed and retracting the active flaps. The Vmax mode, on the other hand, runs the starter-generator that contributes extra power in 3-minute bursts
- At speeds above 241 kmph, maximum power (around 710 hp) is boosted by the roof-mounted air scoop
Gordon Murray will only manufacture 100 units of this supercar, most of which have already been booked by elite car collectors. The T.50 will be built at the Surrey factory in the UK starting next year, and deliveries are due in 2022.
