Meet the Pagani Huayra R, a track-only hypercar

KUALA LUMPUR: The Italian sports carmaker Pagani finally revealed a hardcore, track-only version of its Huayra supercar after a lengthy teaser campaign, called the Huayra R. As a spiritual successor to the Zonda R unveiled in 2009, the new hypercar is pitched as a no limits beast representing the “full expression of Pagani Automobili’s technological development.”

The full-fat Huayra R derives its power from the 6.0-litre naturally-aspirated V12 engine, specifically designed from the ground-up in partnership with Mercedes-backed race team HWA. It churns an impressive output of 838 hp and a peak torque of 750 Nm. According to Pagani, the engine took more than two years to develop. It screams to a 9000 rpm redline and uses a 200 bar direct injection that optimizes its “performance by ensuring maximum efficiency in terms of thermodynamics and autonomy.”

Alongside the engine, the new six-speed sequential transmission on board is also developed in association with HWA AG. It features a “three sintered metal disc racing clutch,” enabling maximum shift precision, extremely reduced shift times, and a friction efficiency of 95%.

The engineers also modified the standard Huayra chassis with new and lighter materials that make the R version both stiffer and lighter than the regular model. The dry weight of the hypercar measures only 2,314 pounds i.e. hundreds of pounds less than the road version.

Two huge focuses for Pagani with this hypercar were aerodynamics and design, as it wanted to make the car beautiful and extremely capable on the track. The automaker has left no stone unturned to design the racing car with gigantic aero elements all-around. And, the efforts resulted in 2,204 pounds of downforce at 199 mph.

The suspension system comprises forged aluminium alloy double wishbones at the front as well as rear. These are combined with helical springs and electronically-controlled adaptive dampers. The hypercar runs on 19-inch forged aluminium alloy wheels wrapped in 275 mm front and 325 mm rear Pirelli P Zero racing tyres. They equip Brembo CCM-R carbon-ceramic brakes, measuring 410 x 38 mm up front, and 390 x 34 mm at the rear, all fastened by six-piston callipers.

The Pagani Huayra R price starts at approximately $3.74 million (RM 12.8 million). The automaker confirmed that only 30 units of the track-only supercar will be available around the world, with each made bespoke to the customer’s desirability.
