KEY TAKEAWAYS
What is the smart #6 EHD?
The smart #6 EHD is smart’s first premium fastback sedan and the brand’s first model to use an Electric Hybrid Drive plug-in hybrid powertrain. What is the range of the smart #6 EHD?
smart claims the #6 EHD can deliver up to 1,810 km of total range on the CLTC cycle, with EV-only range rated at up to 285 km.Will the smart #6 EHD come to Malaysia?
There is no confirmed Malaysian launch yet, but PRO-NET says it is exploring all possibilities for the local market. This is the brand’s first-ever entry into the premium fastback sedan segment, and it signals a clear expansion of its portfolio beyond urban-focused electric hatchbacks and SUVs.

The model has been designed by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, continuing the close collaboration between the two brands.

Visually, the #6 EHD moves away from the upright proportions seen on models like the #1 and #3. Instead, it adopts a low-slung, aerodynamic profile inspired by a shark, giving it a more executive presence.
Despite the coupe-like roofline, smart claims an 86% space efficiency, helped by its wheels-at-the-corners layout. This translates into a cabin that prioritises usability, with generous headroom and a 525-litre boot, placing it firmly in family sedan territory rather than niche lifestyle car.
Inside, the layout is clean and tech-forward. The dashboard integrates dual 13-inch OLED displays, arranged horizontally, reinforcing the brand’s push towards a more premium digital experience.

The biggest talking point here is the new Electric Hybrid Drive (EHD) system. Unlike smart’s existing fully electric lineup, the #6 EHD introduces a hybridised approach focused on range and efficiency.
On paper, the numbers are headline-grabbing:
- Up to 1,810 km total range (CLTC)
- Fuel consumption as low as 3.9L/100 km
These figures place it in a different conversation altogether compared to other recent smarts, targeting buyers who want electrification benefits without the limitations of charging infrastructure.
Driving dynamics have also been given attention, with tuning input from Mercedes-Benz engineers. The car features a ZF steering system and a 4-stage active rear spoiler, suggesting a balance between efficiency and high-speed stability.
Underneath, the #6 EHD adopts a structure described as a “ring-shaped tripod” design, combined with a body constructed from more than 85% high-strength materials. The aim here is to deliver the rigidity and safety expectations of a conventional sedan, despite its electrified powertrain setup.
Photo by Adam AubreyAt nearly 4.9 metres long with a 2,926 mm wheelbase, it sits closer to D-segment territory, while still carrying smart’s signature design cues shaped by Mercedes-Benz.
Under the skin is where things get interesting. The #6 EHD runs a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired to an electrified setup using a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (3DHT).
The engine itself produces around 163 PS and 255 Nm, but the full system output jumps to roughly 320 kW, about 435 PS, putting it firmly into performance sedan territory. That’s backed by a claimed 285 km EV-only range
Dimensionally and mechanically, it leans towards a more planted, premium driving experience. Kerb weight is just under or over the 2-tonne mark depending on variant, while wheel options range from 19 to 20 inches, wrapped in wide 255-section tyres.
While full brake hardware details are still under wraps, the overall setup, including Mercedes-Benz tuning input and features like an active rear spoiler, suggests the focus isn’t just efficiency, but also stability and high-speed composure.

A clear shift in what smart represents
With the #6 EHD, the rebooted smart is no longer just about compact city EVs. This model sits at the opposite end of the spectrum, lower, premium, and built with long-distance usability in mind.
It also highlights smart's broader strategy. Alongside models like the #1, #3 and #5, the addition of the #6 EHD shows how quickly the brand is building out a full range, from urban runabouts to full-sized sedans.
For markets like Malaysia, where hybrid solutions still hold strong appeal, the concept behind the #6 EHD could be particularly relevant if introduced in the future. For now, the model is confirmed to launch first in China.

As with any relevant new model, the company is exploring all possibilities for the Malaysian market. With its PHEV powertrain, the #6 EHD could also open the door to a wider audience for smart in Malaysia.
