Tech Upgrades for Tesla Model S

KUALA LUMPUR: The American automotive company, Tesla famous for developing electric cars and their components around the world adds new options for the existing electric car, Model S.

When the whole world awaits launch for a new electric car by Tesla, Model X, it releases tech upgrades for Model S which includes: 'Ludicrous mode', a longer battery range and a low priced car.

The range on battery pack is increased by 5% which takes the existing battery pack from 85 KW-hour to a 90 KW-hour. Now, it allows customers to drive this car for an extra 15 miles. This new battery pack is available in new cars and also comes with an option for customers to upgrade their existing model. It will cost around $3,000.

Though the upgrade option is on offer for existing Model S owners but the Tesla CEO, Elon Musk said that he doesn't recommend existing owners to go for an upgrade. He also added that the battery is enhanced in technology and not in size by including more silicon in the anode part. The battery used in the electric power-train comprises of 2 electrodes: a cathode and an anode, the former being the positive, while the latter is a negative terminal, and an electrolyte which lets electric charge to flow through.

Another option added to the line-up is a lower priced car, which will cost around $70,000. It will come with 70 KW-hour battery pack and a motor. This is currently the lowest priced car by Tesla and in near future the company plans to cut down the price even more.

Last and the final upgrade for the Model S is the “Ludicrous mode” which adds 10% in acceleration over the usual which now accounts for 2.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour. Earlier, this was 3.1 seconds for the same acceleration. The added feature would cost the customers $10,000 more.

The company also revealed its plans for the remaining year stating that it would like a total of 55,000 cars to roll out by the end of this year, which would be two-third times more than it did in the last year (2014).
