Volkswagen ID. range gets first major OTA update

KUALA LUMPUR: Volkswagen’s ID. range of electric vehicles - ID.3, ID.4, and ID.4 GTX have received their first share of major over-the-air (OTA) software updates. That being said, the ID.3 being the first to benefit from the ‘ID.Software2.3’ version this month, followed by the other two EVs. In addition, the German automaker announced that going forward software updates will be released every 12 weeks.

What does the latest VW OTA software update bring to the table?

The first major over-the-air software update comes with several functional improvements, including enhanced lighting functionalities, improved operability, modified infotainment system design, performance & stability improvements, optimised dynamic main beam control and surrounding recognition.

Thomas Ulbrich, member of the board of management for development at Volkswagen said, “Cars that always have the latest software on board and offer an excellent digital customer experience are extremely important for the future success of the Volkswagen brand.” He further added that “We established the agile project unit ID. Digital specifically to enable us to continuously update software in the car. As such, we are able to quickly gather customer feedback and react flexibly to customer requirements. This means the ID. models remain constantly up to date after delivery, and customer cars retain their value better.”

Since the VW ID. cars are built on the MEB platform with an intelligent and powerful electronic architecture, the automaker can update up to 35 control units via OTA update. Also, the software is an essential part of modern electric vehicles and the ability to issue over the air updates without bothering the customers is a significant plus point.
