Car tinting 101 - Everything you need to know

A plethora of questions crosses through one’s mind while deciding on tinting a vehicle. For those who own a vehicle from years, this phenomenon isn’t new, however not everyone gets it, or is allowed everywhere. As for new owners, it is important for you to be aware of what it means, how it works, and most of the queries usually asked before getting tinting done on a vehicle. Before we begin
with, it is important to know what it is, so here is a walk through the car tinting guide that you must read before you get one for your car.

What is car tinting/window tinting?

Car tinting is usually referred to the process of adding a transparent sheet of film inside the windows of a car. The thin laminate can be added to the exterior of the window surface also. It is mostly composed of polyethene terephthalate (PET), a thermoplastic polymer resin from polyester family. This material possesses properties such as clarity, dimensional stability and tensile strength. It readily accepts a variety of surface-applied or embedded treatments, which makes it perfect for tinting. Besides, it minimizes the impact of infrared rays, ultraviolet radiation and visible light. While it has many uses, most of the people use it for styling also.

What is the window tinting rule in Malaysia?

According to Motor Vehicles Rules, the minimum visible light transmission (VLT) percentage is stipulated to 70% for the front windscreen, and 50% for the front passenger side windows. The new regulations allow drivers to tint the rear windshields and passenger windows as dark as they want. On the contrary, the rear car windows were earlier allowed 30% VLT.

What are the benefits of car tinting?

There are several benefits of tinting the windows of your vehicles, some of which have been explained below.

Safety & Security

The most common reason for tinting windows is privacy. It increases safety and security for passengers sitting inside. The filming on the surface of windows allow passengers to see their valuables. This prevents thieves from looking inside and hence helps curb robbery, which has become very common these days.

Reduces UV Ray Exposure

Overexposure to UV rays can lead to a number of skin problems including cancer, sunburn, premature ageing, etc. Tinted windows can prevent up to 99 per cent of UV rays from entering the vehicle. Besides, it is also helpful in protecting the interior of the car from getting cracks, fading, etc.

Protects window glass from shattering

One of the benefits of window tinting is protection f window glass from shattering in case it gets hit by an object. The film lamination on windows provide strength and hence make it a tad stronger.

Keeps interior cool

With the tint film on the car windows, the interior remains relatively cool. It works well especially in regions with high temperature. The lamination on the vehicle helps ward-off scorching heat, maintaining a comfortable temperature in the cabin (even though AC is required).

While car tinting protects heat from entering the interior of the vehicle and is useful in several ways, it could lessen visibility on the rearview mirror. This could be a bit alarming for the driver, especially during night.

It is important to choose the right tinting for your car windows, which could vary based on your needs and vehicle type. Also, look for the warranty and quality of the tints before getting it on your vehicle.
