2020 Volkswagen Passat breaks cover at Detroit Auto Show
KUALA LUMPUR: Accept it or not, sedans are here to stay. Their days aren’t just over yet and there’s a long journey ahead for the saloons to cover. Remember when the automobile world was treated with a few sketches of the 2020 Passat last month? Reminiscent of the China-exclusive Passat NMS, the newest iteration of the sedan unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show is intended for the American market only. Thus, the 2020 Passat will certainly not act as the replacement of the B8 model in the European market.
Underpinning the 2020 Passat is the same old PQ46 platform and the sedan doesn’t benefit from the MQB platform like the European model. The design language of the newest Passat speaks for itself. Sitting on the same platform, the Passat features a roofline similar to that of a coupe, the shoulder line resembles a “tornado”, and that front grille, we mean, just look at it. Doesn’t the front end of the new Passat boast an amazing look? Move to the sides and you will spot some beautiful looking alloy wheels. While the R Line model gets overwhelming 19-inch alloys, the regular variants come with a set of 17-inch ones.
Moving inside the 2020 Volkswagen Passat we encounter a similar interior setup as the B8 model of the European market. The dashboard houses a horizontal strip of air-conditioning vents. While MIB II Composition Media infotainment system comes as standard on the sedan, buyers can opt for the Discover Media. The new Passat also comes equipped with Volkswagen Car-Net App-Connect which brings along MirrorLink, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay connectivity. There is also on offer the Fender Premium Audio system. The upholstery can be had either in standard cloth, Volkswagen’s V-Tex leatherette, or Nappa leather. For much comfort and convenience, the 2020 Passat can be had with powered driver’s seat with memory function, optional heated front and rear seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Features like rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, adaptive front-lighting System with range control and cornering lights, remote start, easy open tailgate, keyless access and push-button start, and Voice Control also make their way to the sedan.
Powering the 2020 Volkswagen Passat is a 2.0-litre 4-pot TSI engine good enough for 176 PS of maximum power. The powered generated is then sent to the front wheels via a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Safety features include autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring, forward collision warning, blind spot monitor, and rear traffic alert. The 2020 Passat also comes with some handy driver aids like active lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic post-collision braking system, and park assist with park distance control (PDC). All set to go on sale from the second half of 2019, the 2020 Volkswagen Passat will be offered in the US market in 4 different variants.
