2022 GMC Hummer electric pickup debuts with 1,000 horsepower and 350 km range

KUALA LUMPUR: Once synonymous with huge, gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs, the Hummer is back, and this time it's all-electric. GMC has finally pulled the covers off the long-awaited Hummer EV that looks big, bold, and flamboyant with its chunky, squared-off styling, a towering fascia, and the big tyres pushed to the edges. It also gets new technologies and gear under the hood to support the automaker’s claim of “the world’s first super-truck.”

No longer based on a military vehicle, the new Hummer is the first all-electric vehicle in the brand’s lineup, which underpins GM's new Ultium Drive platform. For now, the automaker revealed its ‘Edition 1’ trim highlighting:

  • Three-motor e4WD drive system that offers an estimated power of 1,000 hp and a peak torque of 11,500 lb-ft
  • 800-volt DC public fast-charging compatibility of up to 350 kilowatts enables the truck to get nearly 100 miles of range in 10 minutes of charging
  • An estimated 350+ miles of driving range on a full charge, as per preliminary testing
  • The latest version of Super Cruise borrowed from Cadillac which offers more than 200,000 miles (322,000 km) of hands-free driving on certain roads
  • At a full acceleration capability of the EV propulsion system, the EV hits the 0-100-kmph mark in 3 seconds

“This innovative truck comes to market with speed and purpose, bringing GM another step closer to an all-electric future,” said Mark Reuss, president of General Motors. “With our Ultium Drive architecture as the foundation for an exceptionally broad range of performance, HUMMER EV is perfect for the customer who wants capability, efficiency, and performance.”

In terms of styling, the tall front end of the pickup features a light-up six-slot grille bearing the Hummer wordmark flanked by two H-shaped LED headlights and a massive bumper with a heavy skid plate that hint at its off-road prowess. At the rear, there are LED tail lights, a heavy-duty bumper with D-rings, and a six-position MultiPro tailgate.

For off-roading intentions, the pickup equips 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler All Territory MT tyres enabling it to scale 18 inches (457 mm) vertical hurdles and drive through 2 feet (610 mm) of water. Even larger 37-inch tyres are also available. Other key highlights of the 2022 Hummer EV are:

  • Premium and technical interior materials
  • 13.4-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch driver display conveying the vehicle performance and driver awareness information
  • Power rear drop glass window
  • Drive Mode Control
  • Adaptive Ride Control
  • Open-air driving
  • UltraVision front and rear underbody cameras

Set to rival the upcoming Tesla Cybertruck, the GMC Hummer EV price starts at $112,595 (RM 466,606). Its production is scheduled to start at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck factory in fall 2021.
