A90 Toyota Supra to get higher power versions

KUALA LUMPUR: It was only a while back that Toyota launched the A90 Supra and shortly after that, tuners got their hands on it to modify it on the power front. And now, the A90 Supra is all set to go on a re-tuning regime in Toyota’s own factory. It will result in a Supra lineup with robust powerplants and high-performance figures.

Toyota Supra will soon be revealed in 340 PS/500 Nm version - as told by Tetsuya Tada, the car’s chief engineer. He further said, “With a sports car, the promise is to offer more performance with each additional version.” What’s even better is that a new version of the car can be expected every year. Supra’s sister car, the G29 BMW Z4 is also offered with the same mill with identical output.

It’s no joy for people looking for a conventional stick-shift A90 Supra, and so, the chief engineer asked such buyers to transfer their interest to other models in the company’s lineup. He said, “Customers who want a manual should choose a Toyota 86”. Last September, Masayuki Kai, Supra’s assistant chief engineer said that A90 Supra manual version has been developed and it was (back then) being prepared for the right-hand-drive markets.

Given that the Supra’s shares underpinnings with the BMW Z4, an open-top version is highly unlikely. Mr. Tada noted that “The relationship between the Supra and the Z4 resembles the relationship between the Porsche Cayman and Boxster.” Even though the two cars share the same base, both the models feature a distinctive tone since 2014.

The BMW Z4 and Supra are also different in terms of their approaches to configurability - while the Supra coupe is available in two models, the German roadster is offered in a wide variety. However, the big question is how Toyota will achieve giving Supra performance enhancement with iteration.
