BMW M2 Coupe Review
Abhishek Katariya says
The BMW M2 Coupe might be the smallest offering in BMW’s M division of performance-oriented sports cars. However, it still promises all the pedigree to be one fine performance car coming out from the much-famed legacy of BMW’s M-division. The BMW M2 Coupe is available in Malaysia in one standard full spec variant, with one powertrain, four exterior paint shades – Alpine White, Long Beach Blue, Black Sapphire, and Mineral Grey and two different options for upholstery as well as trim levels.
BMW M2 Coupe Interior & Features
On the inside too, the BMW M2 Coupe has got the traditional layout of other BMWs from recent years. However, while the other cars have moved on with fancier TFT panels and more rich looking panels, the M2 Coupe resorts to old school dials and buttons, which have begun to show their age.
Take for instance, the M-sport round themed multifunctional steering wheel as well as regular looking instrument console with analog dials, which look a bit dated and last generation like. The wide centre console with trapezoidal theme for AC vents and buttons for climate control too look as if they belong to the last generation. The free-standing trapezoidal touchscreen infotainment system packs in all the data for music, navigation and customizable controls for driving dynamics.
While the BMW M2 Coupe lacks the novelty of other BMWs, it still has got the fine fit and finish levels and impeccable build quality of others. Space at the rear of this four-seater car is at a premium, due to its compact size and two-door theme.
M2 Coupe Exterior
The BMW M2 Coupe has got the traditional BMW design language without breaking any new grounds, unlike how the M8 and i8, or even the new generation M3 have done in the past. However, it is unmistakably an M-division car, and that can be told just by looking at the subtle differences over the regular 2 Series sold overseas.
The front fascia with the double kidney grille and beak-shaped LED headlamps with dual corona ring-shaped daytime running LEDs give it a very BMW-ish face, which is easily recognizable. Here, the grille is finished in all black theme and the front bumper do come with sporty and aggressive air vents.
The BMW M2 Coupe looks short and compact from the sides, thanks to a small wheelbase, two-door look, and curvy coupe roofline, all of which do make the car look sporty. As expected, the M2 Coupe does get edgy looking M-sport alloy wheels.
At the rear too, the BMW M2 Coupe has got the very familiar looking set of wing-shaped tail lamps with LED inserts and aggressive looking rear bumper with dual exhaust pipes on either sides. The boot here too comes with a sleek looking integrated spoiler.
BMW M2 Coupe Ride & Handling
The BMW M2 Coupe follows the lineage of other BMW M-division cars of having a spot-on balance of steering and suspension, making it a driver’s delight. With all the possible varying drive modes and adaptive suspension settings as well as perfectly weighted steering, one can hone his driving skills to perfection.
M2 Coupe Engine & Fuel Consumption
For the Malaysian market, the BMW M2 Coupe has been blessed with the 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder petrol engine mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The engine breathes out a maximum power output of 370 PS and a peak torque output of 500 Nm. While the figures are not too enthusiastic on paper, considering the small size of the car, it does feel energetic. The top speed is rated at 250 kmph, with the car capable of touching the 100 kmph mark from standstill in 4.6 seconds.
BMW M2 Coupe Braking & Safety
The BMW M2 Coupe has got a decent list of safety features onboard, with kit like airbags all around, ABS with EBD and brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, hill start assist, front and rear parking sensors, daytime pedestrian protection, frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation, lane departure warning and BMW assist e-call.
M2 Coupe Verdict
The BMW M2 Coupe might not be as modern and edgy as other M models from BMW, with the interior design feeling its age. However, for purists, what matters more is the driving experience, and the M2 Coupe delivers brilliantly on that front.
