KAULA LUMPUR: The updated SUV, with a lot of aesthetic updates as well as the inclusion of a hybrid powertrain has been revealed by Ford. This Police Interceptor Utility also brings with it the preview of the upcoming Ford Explorer.

Going by the images of the 2020 Ford Police Interceptor Utility, the SUV features a new apron with a hexagonal air intake, revised fog lamps, and trim. This new apron has been placed under an updated front grille which is flanked by a pair of slimmer than before headlamps. Also, the SUV for the police has got emergency lights, spotlights, and a bull bar as well.

The Police Interceptor Utility also meets Ford’s stringent 120 kmph (75 mph) rear-impact crash standard which is way more and better than the federal standard that has been set at 80 kmph (50 mph). Thanks to the ultra-high-strength boron steel and crumple zones, the SUV is equipped with structural reinforcement and safety cells. The stability of the PIU has also been bettered with the usage of a specially tuned braking system, improved cooling systems, and police-purposed steel wheels. An eight-inch curb impact, median crossing and 48 kmph (30 mph) railroad crossing validation, and water fording to 18 inches at 24 kmph (15 mph) and 10 inches at 64 kmph (40 mph) are tests which the car has gone through.

Other notable features on the 2020 Ford Police Interceptor Utility include low- and high-beam LED headlamps, four user-configurable steering wheel switches, a Class III trailer tow receiver with 5,000-pound capacity, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and Bluetooth pass-through commands to mobile devices. Talking of the mechanicals of the SUV, the car comes with three different powertrains. Along with 3.0-litre EcoBoost and 3.3-litre V6 motors, there is also a 3.3 litre-hybrid system available. The all-wheel-drive is available 24x7 and the power delivery is taken care of by a 10-speed automatic transmission.
