Isuzu D-Max hits record high market share in Malaysia amid rising diesel costs

KUALA LUMPUR:  Despite rising diesel prices affecting perceptions towards diesel vehicles in Peninsular Malaysia, the Isuzu D-Max continues to win over Malaysians, recording its highest-ever market share in the pick-up truck segment during the first quarter of 2025.

Thanks to strong demand driven by the truck’s reputation for reliability, efficiency, and low operating costs, Isuzu D-Max has now secured the number two spot in Malaysia’s pick-up segment.

From January to March 2025, Isuzu claimed an 18.3% market share, up notably from the 14.0% achieved during the same period in 2024.

According to Kenkichi Sogo, Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia, the increasing popularity is a clear indication that consumers are recognizing the benefits of the D-Max. "What we have clearly seen is a growing number of buyers who have discovered the merits of owning and driving an Isuzu D-Max," Sogo explained. He highlighted the pick-up’s versatility, low running costs, and cheap road tax, all of which help buyers manage increasing daily expenses.

Isuzu’s presence in East Malaysia remains robust, holding a significant 28.4% market share in regions like Sabah. However, its growth in Peninsular Malaysia is especially remarkable, rising sharply from 12.1% last year to 17.1% this year.

The brand's 1.9-litre engine variants are particularly popular, with the top three models—the 1.9-litre 4x4 Auto Premium, 1.9-litre 4x4 Auto Standard, and 1.9-litre 4x2 Auto Plus—together making up 72.7% of total sales.

Notably, two of these variants recently secured spots in the Malaysian Book of Records by travelling an impressive 2,004km on a single tank of fuel.

With attractive styling, superior fuel efficiency, competitive running costs, and an affordable annual road tax under RM400, it's clear why Malaysians are increasingly opting for the Isuzu D-Max amidst rising living costs.
