Malaysia launches eTesting for driving license test: A digital leap forward, 150 candidates available to take tests daily, only RM100 extra

KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced the forthcoming introduction of the electronic driving test system (eTesting) at three driving institutes, slated for next month.

According to The Star's report, under this new system, candidates will have the option to either undergo the conventional driving test or choose eTesting. The latter will revolutionize the practical course test (KPP02), where candidates will navigate specially equipped cars monitored by sensors, overseen by Road Transport Department (JPJ) officers stationed at a control booth.

To incentivise the adoption of eTesting, Minister Loke assured candidates opting for this innovative method offers several perks. These include the opportunity for immediate retakes of failed elements of KPP02 on the same day at no extra cost and priority queuing over standard test candidates. Additionally, candidates will receive a RM10 rebate upon acquiring their Learner’s Driving Licence (LDL).

Minister Loke emphasized that driving schools are only permitted to charge a maximum additional fee of RM100 for candidates opting for eTesting.

The eTesting initiative will initially be available at Surfine Hitech Driving Institution in Hulu Langat, Berjaya Bhd Driving Training Centre in Ulu Tiram, Johor, and Institut Lima Bintang Abadi Sdn Bhd in Penang.

Minister Loke expressed optimism regarding the potential of the eTesting system to enhance the integrity and efficiency of JPJ's driving tests and driving institutes.

"With eTesting, up to 150 candidates can undergo the KPP02 in a single day, requiring only two JPJ officers to monitor the system from the control room. This streamlined process will expedite licensing procedures, reduce officer-candidate interactions, and bolster the integrity of JPJ's operations," he remarked.

Encouraging nationwide adoption, Minister Loke urged other driving schools to transition to eTesting by 2030, offering them the flexibility to choose from approved system providers. Currently, three providers are approved, with three more undergoing evaluation by the eTesting Project Evaluation Committee.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke's push towards digitalisation in the transportation sector is part of a broader vision to enhance efficiency, safety, and accessibility within Malaysia's transport infrastructure.

By embracing digital technologies, Loke aims to streamline operations, reduce bureaucratic red tape, and improve the overall user experience for both the public and the operators within the transport ecosystem.

Digitalisation initiatives, such as the implementation of cashless payment systems for public transportation, real-time tracking of buses and trains, and the digitisation of licensing and registration processes, are intended to make transportation services more reliable, convenient, and transparent for users.

Moreover, Loke's digitalisation efforts are aligned with global trends and the Malaysian government's aspirations to leverage technology to foster economic growth, sustainability, and resilience against future challenges.

By modernizing the transport sector, Loke is positioning Malaysia to better compete on the international stage, attract foreign investment, and meet the evolving needs of its citizens and businesses.

Digitalisation is also a critical component in addressing urban mobility challenges, reducing carbon emissions through more efficient transport operations, and enhancing road safety through advanced monitoring and enforcement technologies.

Through these initiatives, Anthony Loke aims to lead a transformation that not only improves the current state of transportation in Malaysia but also sets a foundation for continuous innovation and development in the years to come.
