Mazda renews the MX-6 trademark
KUALA LUMPUR: The Japanese manufacturer, Mazda has applied to renew the trademark of 'MX-6'. It is one of the classic names and the company seems to have filed the trademark to save it from falling into other hands. The manufacturer completed the filing at the Japanese Patent Office in October.
The MX-6 is not a new name for the United States as the sports car was present in the market from 1987 to 1997. One of its variants was a front-wheel-driven coupe, which failed to gain any popularity. A GT model of the vehicle was also introduced with a turbo-4 engine, which was capable of making a maximum power of 145 hp.
The second-gen MX-6 was launched in 1992. Equipped with a 2.5-litre V-6 engine, it was capable of providing a maximum power of 164 hp. However, this also failed to make any mark and the manufacturer finally pulled the sports car out of the market.
As of now, Mazda has only filed a trademark, which does not indicate that the sports car is going to see the light of the day anytime soon. This might just be a step to protect the name from getting used elsewhere in the near future. Akira Marumoto, the CEO of Mazda, while talking about the company’s future plans at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, mentioned that there are no plans of launching a rotary sports car as of now.
