Nine-minute charging and a 256-line LiDAR: meet the Changan Nevo Q06

KUALA LUMPUR: Changan opened pre-orders for the Nevo Q06 in China recently, and on paper it is one of the more interesting electric SUVs to appear this year. An 800V architecture, 6C charging, LiDAR-based driver assistance, and a starting price of 149,900 yuan.

    The charging figure is the headline

    The Q06 sits on an 800V silicon carbide platform and supports 6C fast charging, which Changan says takes the battery from 30 to 80 percent in nine minutes.

    For context on how quick that is, look at what Malaysian buyers can currently get. The Leapmotor C10 Plus is the most affordable 800V electric SUV on sale in Malaysia at the moment, priced from RM129,000. It charges at up to 180 kW and covers the same 30 to 80 percent window in 22 minutes. The Q06 claims to do it in nine.

    Whether Malaysian charging infrastructure could actually feed it is a separate conversation entirely, and one worth having if this car ever lands here.

    What else is under it

    Battery options are 63.18, 66.02, 72.54 and 80.02 kWh LFP units from CALB or CATL, with up to 700 km of claimed range. Single-motor versions make 302 hp or 329 hp, while the dual-motor rear-drive car makes 443 hp and does 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. There is also a range-extender version with up to 1,600 km of combined range.

    Suspension is all-aluminium double wishbone at the front with a five-link rear, which is proper hardware for the price bracket it occupies in China.

    Size matters here too. The Q06 measures 4,837 mm long and 1,970 mm wide on a 2,940 mm wheelbase. That is within a few millimetres of the BYD Sealion 7, so this is a mid-size SUV, not a compact one.

    Inside there is SDA Cockpit 2.0 running on dual TC399 chips, a 15.6-inch rear entertainment screen, ventilated, heated and massaging seats, a fridge, a 196-litre frunk and a 782-litre boot.

    SDA Pilot is the other half of the story

    The Q06 is Changan's first production car to get SDA Pilot, the company's in-house driver assistance system, which launched at the same event.

    There are four tiers. Pro runs 100-plus TOPS, Max 200-plus, Ultra 500-plus with a vision-language model on top, and an Ultimate version with more than 1,000 TOPS is still to come. The Q06 itself is offered with Pro or Ultra only, so Max sits this one out.

    Ultra is the interesting one. Changan quotes a 560 TOPS chip and a 256-line LiDAR, covering highway NCA, urban NCA, parking assist trained across more than 400 scenarios, and 31 active safety functions.

    The company says active LiDAR detection and 10Hz high-frequency reasoning let it spot hazards earlier than a human driver in low light, glare, rain or fog. The end-to-end model behind it has been trained on more than 20 million segments of real driving.

    Changan has been building towards this for a while. Forward collision warning and lane departure warning prototypes came in 2011, mass production of its Level 2 IACC system followed in 2018, and on 20 December 2025 the company received the first official licence plate in China for Level 3 conditional autonomous driving.

    "Changan began developing intelligent driving technology in 2009, when it was still a laboratory subject in China. SDA Pilot is the result of everything we have learned since," said Zhao Fei, president of Changan Group.

    The spending behind it is substantial. "Changan's intelligent driving team has grown from a handful of engineers to more than 7,500 people, backed by cumulative R&D investment of more than EUR 7.7 billion. We will continue to pursue our strategy for intelligent transformation and to build our core technologies in-house," said Zhu Huarong, chairman of Changan Group.

    Why this is the one to watch for Malaysia

    Changan Malaysia has not opened its doors yet. Reports point to a Q4 2026 entry, with Changan, Nevo and Deepal under one roof and Avatr running separately. 

    If Changan does bring the Nevo Q06 here, it would be the car that sets the tone for the whole brand. This is the tech flagship, the one carrying SDA Pilot Ultra, the 800V platform and the 256-line LiDAR, and it tells Malaysian buyers exactly what Changan is capable of. 

    That is a role worth having. Every Chinese brand that has arrived here in the last three years has needed a car that makes people stop and look, and a mid-size SUV with nine-minute charging and LiDAR would do that comfortably.

    It is also new enough to still feel current by Q4 2026, which counts for a lot when you are introducing a badge Malaysians have not owned before. None of this is a launch announcement. It is just what the pieces on the table look like when you put them side by side.

    But if it does come, expect a very well-specified Level 2 car, with 800V charging and LiDAR on the upper trims. One to watch closely between now and the end of 2026.
