Proton to Launch New GDI and TGDI Engines

Kuala Lumpur: Proton has finally made an announcement about launching an all-new range of GDI and TGDI engines. Although no name has been given to these new-generation engines, but one thing is sure that they would be replacing the older Proton Campro engines by 2020. Proton has been using these Campro engines since 2004, and now they thought is the right time to evolve themselves and face tough competition from international automakers. The national automaker hinted towards its plans of new mills range in October 2015 itself, and now they have kept their promise by living up to the expectations. The company would start integrating these engines into Proton models from 2018 onwards.

Talking about the engines, they would be offered in both naturally-aspirated (GDI) and turbocharged (TGDI) forms along with the direct injection system. To be precise, a total of six variants would be made available which are as under:

• 1.0-litre 3-cylinder VVT engine
• 1.2-litre 3-cylinder VVT engine
• 1.3-litre 4-cylinder GDI engine
• 1.5-litre 4-cylinder GDI engine
• 1.3-litre 4-cylinder TGDI engine
• 1.5-litre 4-cylinder TGDI engine

The best-in-class 1.5-litre 4-cylinder TGDI engine is capable of churning out a maximum power of 180 hp along with a peak torque of 250 Nm. As compared to the existing engines, these new ones would be more powerful and would have a better fuel efficiency. Proton revealed that a total of 200 engineers were appointed to develop these new engines for a time frame of 3 years. The total cost of this project has come to RM600 million and it would take around 40 months to develop all the six variants. Apart from this RM600 million, Proton has also signed a RM240 million contract with the car electronics parts manufacturing company Multi-Code Electronics Industries.

With the launch of these new GDI and TGDI engines, Proton may surely be able to grab a larger market in the Malaysian auto industry. Although the automaker has not provided any information about which engine would be installed in which model, but we have prepared a speculative sheet about the Proton models which might come with the new set of engines.
