Omoda C9 PHEV: Key things that make it stand out

The plug-in hybrid SUV market is heating up in Malaysia, and buyers are no longer settling for anything less than exceptional. Considering that, Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia launched the C9 PHEV in the local market earlier this month, giving a tough run for money to both mainstream and premium SUVs. 

Key things that make the Omoda C9 PHEV stand out are its high performance, long electric range, and premium comfort, wrapped in an accessible package that costs RM 208,800. The PHEV targets new-age buyers who want to embrace electrification but are not ready to go fully electric, as the EV infrastructure is still developing in the country. 

Let’s take a closer look at what makes the Omoda C9 PHEV stand out. 

A PHEV that feels like a performance SUV

The C9 PHEV comes powered by the segment-first tri-motor plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder engine and a tri-motor setup (two motors at the front and one at the rear), which delivers an electrifying driving experience.

The engine produces a maximum power of 143 PS and a peak torque of 215 Nm and offers a thermal efficiency of up to 44.5%. At the front axle, dual electric motors produce a combined output of 165 kW and 390 Nm with strong and responsive power delivery, while at the rear, the single motor churns out 238 PS and 310 Nm of torque, delivering additional traction and intelligent all-wheel-drive capability. 

Mated to a 3-Speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, the plug-in hybrid setup generates a combined output of 537 PS and 650 Nm of torque, enabling the PHEV to hit the century sprint in 4.9 seconds. These numbers put the electrified Omoda C9 closer to a performance SUV rather than traditional family-oriented hybrid models.

Impressive efficiency for its size

Despite its performance credentials, the latest Omoda SUV is quite efficient thanks to its unique dual-motor SHS architecture, which not only delivers strong propulsion but also contributes to regenerative braking, providing greater energy recovery that leads to improved overall system efficiency.

The PHEV comes with six selectable drive modes, three levels of regenerative braking, and a dedicated function to switch between Full EV and Smart HEV modes,  ensuring optimal performance.

Looking at the numbers, the fuel consumption of the Omoda C9 PHEV is rated at 1.4 litres per 100 km (NEDC), which means the EV can run for up to 1,100 km on a full 70-litre tank and a fully charged battery.

Long EV range 

The advanced Super Hybrid System integrates a 34.46 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing a total pure EV range of up to 150 km (WLTP), which means daily office runs or city driving can be done entirely on electric power. The long electric range allows the C9 PHEV to function like a pure EV for everyday use, reducing fuel consumption as well as emissions.  

As far as the charging time is concerned, 30% to 80% battery can be replenished in 25 minutes using 70 kW of DC fast charging.

Distinctive coupe-SUV design

Guided by a Golden Proportion design, the vehicle boasts a premium SUV coupe silhouette combining sporty elegance with aerodynamic precision. It features a bold presence with refined detailing, highlighted by a diamond-matrix grille, signature LED lighting, and hidden door handles.

Adding to its commanding road presence are sculpted bumpers, class-leading double-glazed front windows, performance quad exhaust tips, 3D effect LED tail lamp and 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The SUV offers a sophisticated and technology-focussed cabin with premium black leather upholstery, refined fit and finishes, and several advanced technology systems, proving luxury and comfort need not cost an arm and a leg. The feature kit includes -

Overall, the new Omoda C9 PHEV caters to the new-age buyers' needs very well. On one hand, it offers adequate electric driving range for daily commutes with petrol backup for long travel, while on the other hand, it delivers sporty SUV-like performance with impressive comfort features on board, making it a compelling choice in the premium performance SUV segment.
