Jaecoo J5 EV launched in Malaysia at RM118,800 – 211 PS, 461 km range, 130 kW DC charging

KUALA LUMPUR: Omoda|Jaecoo has officially entered Malaysia’s fully electric vehicle market with the launch of the J5 EV, priced at RM118,800 on-the-road without insurance.

Offered in a single variant, the J5 EV is the brand’s first fully electric model in Malaysia and is positioned as a premium B-segment electric SUV.

It also represents another important milestone for the company locally, as the J5 EV is CKD locally assembled at the Chery Corporate Malaysia plant in Shah Alam.

For the first 1,000 J5 EV units delivered by October 31, 2026, Jaecoo is also throwing in a launch package worth RM10,000. This comprises one year of free insurance worth RM3,000, three years of data connectivity worth RM1,000, a 7 kW Jaecoo home charger worth RM3,300, a V2L connector cable worth RM700 and J5 EV lifestyle accessories worth RM2,000.

On top of that, early buyers also receive 12 months of unlimited charging through JomCharge, which currently has more than 1,353 charging points nationwide. 

Power comes from a single electric motor producing 155 kW, equivalent to 211 PS, and 288 Nm of torque, allowing the J5 EV to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.

Its motor is powered by a 58.9 kWh CATL-supplied LFP battery, with Jaecoo claiming up to 461 km of range on the NEDC cycle.

Charging is handled by an 11 kW AC onboard charger, which takes approximately seven hours to charge the battery from 10% to 100%. The J5 EV also supports DC fast charging at up to 130 kW.

Beyond the electric powertrain, Jaecoo has tried to give the J5 EV some genuine SUV credentials.

It offers 174 mm of ground clearance and a claimed 450 mm wading depth, while an Active Grille Shutter and 18-inch aerodynamic wheels are intended to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve efficiency.

Despite its relatively compact dimensions, practicality appears to be one of the J5 EV’s stronger points.

There is a 35-litre front trunk, while the rear boot offers a claimed 480 litres of cargo capacity, expanding to 1,284 litres with the rear seats folded. A large 1.45-metre panoramic glass roof helps give the cabin a more open feel.

Jaecoo has also equipped the J5 EV with a 540-degree HD surround-view camera, which combines the usual external camera views with a simulated transparent view beneath the vehicle to help when manoeuvring through tight areas.

Safety and driver assistance are covered by 19 Level 2+ ADAS functions.

These include full-speed adaptive cruise control, Integrated Cruise Assist, lane keeping assistance, lane departure prevention, blind spot detection, autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert and braking, Traffic Jam Assist, Evasive Steering Assist and Emergency Lane Keeping Assist.

One particularly interesting number Jaecoo has highlighted is the J5 EV’s 35,900 Nm/degree torsional rigidity.

While that probably won't mean much to the average buyer on its own, a stiffer body structure can help the suspension work more effectively and contribute towards better refinement and a greater feeling of solidity. Jaecoo also says the structure contributes to passive occupant protection.

That could prove significant, because one of the recurring themes surrounding the J5 EV overseas has been how surprisingly substantial the little SUV feels, particularly when it comes to cabin quality, ride comfort and general refinement.

There are plenty of lifestyle-oriented features too.

The J5 EV comes with Pet Mode and Camping Mode, while 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) allows the traction battery to power compatible external electrical equipment — useful for everything from camping equipment to appliances during outdoor activities.

Jaecoo is also giving buyers a particularly lengthy warranty package.

The J5 EV comes with a seven-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, while its high-voltage battery is covered for 10 years or 200,000 km. Jaecoo says its Malaysian network currently consists of 56 showrooms and 53 service centres, which are being prepared to support its growing range of electrified vehicles.

Three exterior colours are available: Alpine Green, Fjord Grey and Carbon Crystal Black.

At RM120,000, the J5 EV enters one of the most competitive parts of Malaysia’s rapidly growing EV market.

And interestingly, it doesn't appear to be trying to win purely through headline battery capacity, range or outright acceleration.

Instead, Jaecoo appears to be putting greater emphasis on refinement, equipment, interior space and making a relatively compact B-segment EV feel more substantial than its size suggests.

With 211 PS, 461 km of claimed NEDC range, 130 kW DC charging, a 10-year battery warranty and a long equipment list, the J5 EV certainly has enough on paper to make itself relevant.

The bigger question is whether, at RM120,000, it can convince Malaysian buyers that feeling a little more premium is enough to stand out in what is quickly becoming a very crowded EV market.
