Subaru S209 at last flies out of Japan
KUALA LUMPUR: The Japs do this quite a lot don’t they? They create some really sweet and amazing machines and then keep those to themselves. How frustrating it is for an automobile enthusiast? The people outside of Japan have always been wanting to have the Subaru STI-crafted-S-line performance model. However, various laws and the stubborn Japanese manufacturers have made it impossible. Americans have craved for various S models like the S203 and the S402. But no more wait and frustration. Subaru has launched the S209 in Detroit and the car will be roaring on the American roads for the first time soon.
The latest S209 has been inspired by the WRX STI Nürburgring Challenge racecar. The S209 houses a 2.5-litre EJ25 boxer engine with an HKS turbocharger. The motor produces an increased 346 PS of maximum power thanks to the forged internals and better tuning for improved mid-range torque. The S209 also gets a more efficient intake and exhaust system, higher flow fuel pump and injectors, and intercooler water spray as well. There is also a new ECU unit from STI. Talking more about the mechanicals, the car gets recalibrated Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) and SI-Drive systems.
In terms of appearance, the Subaru S209 boasts particularly aggressive looks. The car rides on 19 by 9 forged BBS alloys clothed with 265/35 R19 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT600A tyres. The braking duties have been assigned to Brembo rotors with 6-piston callipers up front and 2-piston callipers at the rear. Flat underbody trays and a large spoiler at the rear better the overall aerodynamics of the car.
For a smooth ride and crazy track experience, the Subaru S209 comes equipped with Bilstein dampers and stiffer coil springs along with a larger 20 mm anti-roll bar at the rear. You will find STI and S209 badges all over the car including the exterior and the interior. Moreover, the steering wheel is wrapped with Ultrasuede. What’s the best part of all this? Only 200 units of the Subaru S209 with a left-hand drive will be produced and too only for the US. How about that?
