The all-new Toyota Supra might debut with a four-cylinder turbo

KUALA LUMPUR: Though it is already confirmed in the news that the all-new 5th generation Toyota model, the Supra, is set to make its debut, what is making headlines is whether it will come with a four-cylinder turbo or not. As per Road & Track (automobile enthusiast magazine), the Supra is reported to feature a turbocharged four-cylinder option.

Road & Track extracted this information from some documents from ZF, which is the German company responsible for designing the model’s eight-speed automatic gearbox. The vehicle was brought to the Goodwood Festival of Speed for an exhibition of its engine outputs.

According to the report, the Toyota Supra will derive its power from a 2.0-litre turbo inline-four engine. It will supposedly put out 265 PS of power in comparison to the 340 horsepower given by the bigger turbo 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder. The ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox is being speculated to be the only transmission option for the all-new Toyota model.

It is believed that the upcoming Toyota Supra will feature a very toned-down frontal area, but a wider rear. The vents will be placed under the headlight that seemingly will be effective in channelising the air over the front wheels. Further, a vent is also positioned just above the front wheel to help boost downforce. The car might also feature a bigger and considerably functional diffuser. The wheels are being estimated to measure about 19 inches all around.

Tetsuya Tada, who is the chief engineer for the new Toyota Supra, had some say here. On the basis of what he stated, it is somewhat confirmed that the new Supra will indeed hit the dealership with a smaller turbo four-cylinder powertrain. He also stated that compared to the six-cylinder model, the smaller engine will enjoy improved weight distribution.

However, this statement diametrically contradicted to what the auto manufacturing company announced earlier regarding the inline-six model’s 50:50 weight distribution.
