2022 Volkswagen Golf R launched in Malaysia at RM 356,412

KUALA LUMPUR: We have seen a number of teasers as well as spy shots of the new Volkswagen Golf, but now our wait is finally over as Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has launched the all-new Golf family in Malaysia. The local lineup of the upgraded hyper hatch includes the all-new Volkswagen Golf R, Golf GTI, and the Golf R-Line. 

Among these models, the flagship Golf R sits on the top and is now available as a CBU model carrying a hefty price tag of RM 356,412.85 (on-the-road with SST exemption, before insurance). Included in the price is a three years free maintenance, five years unlimited mileage warranty, and five years roadside assistance.

So, what does this performance hatch offer to enthusiasts?

The new Volkswagen Golf R is an ultimate performance hatchback model that has set and broken several records worldwide. Volkswagen touted it as the most well-rounded model available in the market, and the production and sales of 250,000 units of the Golf R is a testament to that.

Equipped with a combination of a 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged engine and 7-speed DSG, the latest iteration is the most powerful Golf R model yet. The engine delivers a maximum power output of 320 PS and a peak torque of 400 Nm. This enables the car to run from zero to 100 kmph in 4.8 seconds before clocking a top speed of 250 kmph.

This hyper hatch is also fitted with a new all-wheel-drive system, the 4MOTION with Performance Torque Vectoring. It aids in the distribution of the power between the front and rear wheels and also between the two rear wheels at times to significantly increase the agility of the hatchback. The new Volkswagen Golf R is the first Volkswagen to have this intelligent and innovative system.

Adding to the performance and precision handling are systems like electronic differential locks (XDS), dynamic chassis control, and progressive steering.

On the exterior, the new Volkswagen Golf is kitted with an R styling pack, including an R design front bumper, an R design rear bumper, quad exhaust tailpipes, R radiator grille, and R side skirts. We can also see LED lights all around, 19-inch Adelaide dual-tone alloy wheels, and an integrated rear roof spoiler on the tailgate. Available colour options are Lapiz Blue, Deep Black, and Pure White.

Inside the cabin of the new Volkswagen Golf R, you will get a digital cockpit with 10-inch TFT display, 10-inch Discover Pro infotainment unit, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three-zone auto air conditioning, ambient lighting,  a 480W Harman Kardon 10-speaker sound system, auto-dimming rearview mirror, Nappa leather and more.

Included in the safety kit are 6 airbags, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, Driver alert system, fatigue detection, Side Assist with rear cross-traffic alert, and Proactive passenger protection system.
