Volkswagen Tayron launched in Malaysia: 7-seater SUV from RM189,890, R-Line open for preview

KUALA LUMPUR: Volkswagen Malaysia has a new flagship-adjacent SUV, and it slots in exactly where the brand has been missing one.

The all-new Volkswagen Tayron has made its Malaysian debut on 13 July 2026, positioned between the Tiguan and the Touareg as a proper seven-seater for families who have outgrown the usual five-seat options.

Two variants are on offer. The Tayron Elegance runs a 1.5-litre eTSI mild hybrid and retails at RM189,890, which comes to RM200,760 on the road with the Volkswagen Assurance Package (excluding insurance).

The sportier Tayron R-Line packs a 2.0-litre TSI turbo with all-wheel drive and sits at an estimated price of RM 259,000 to RM 269,000, as it is currently open for preview only. It features the same engine as the Golf GTI.

Both are locally assembled at the Volkswagen plant in Pekan, which matters for pricing and, down the line, parts.

Early Bird Merdeka deal for the first 69 buyers

With the 69th Merdeka around the corner, VPCM is throwing in an early bird package for the first 69 Tayron owners: 7 years free maintenance, complimentary personal accident and car key coverage, and a shot at winning a 3D/2N luxury getaway.

Standard buyers still get the Volkswagen Assurance Package, which covers 5 years free maintenance, 5 years manufacturer's warranty and 5 years roadside assistance.

Two very different powertrains

This is where the two variants split properly, not just on trim.

The Elegance uses a 1.5-litre eTSI mild hybrid making 150 PS and 250 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a 7-speed wet DSG. The 48-volt belt-driven starter-alternator gives it a small shove off the line and lets the engine coast or shut off when it can, while Active Cylinder Management (ACTplus) kills two cylinders under light loads.

The result is a claimed 6.1L/100km, which is genuinely frugal for something this size. The 0-100 km/h sprint takes 9.6 seconds, so it is more cruiser than bruiser.

The R-Line is the one for Malaysian buyers who want the more full shuv numbers. It features a 2.0-litre TSI turbo puts out 265 PS and 400 Nm, paired with the same 7-speed wet DSG but driving all four wheels through 4MOTION.

That drops the 0-100 km/h time to 6.1 seconds, at the cost of a claimed 8.5L/100km. Both variants get Dynamic Chassis Control Pro (DCC Pro) adaptive suspension as standard, which continuously adjusts damping to the road.

Space is the whole point

The Tayron measures 4,792 mm long with a wheelbase of around 2,790 mm, and every one of those millimetres is put to work.

All seven seats are usable, the second row slides and splits 40:20:40, the third row folds 50:50, and with rows two and three flat you get up to 1,905 litres of cargo space.

Boot space with all seats up is 345 litres. A hands-free tailgate is standard on both variants.

Inside, both get Varenna leather upholstery and ergoActive Plus front seats with 12-way power adjustment, memory, heating, ventilation and a 10-air-cushion massage function with programmes running 10 to 30 minutes.

Three-zone Climatronic climate control, 30-colour ambient lighting, a heated steering wheel and the new rotary Multi-Function Control knob on the centre console are also shared.

Tech and safety

The digital setup is Volkswagen's latest MIB4 generation. The Elegance gets a 12.9-inch Discover infotainment display, the R-Line a 15-inch Discover Pro Max.

Both run wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the IDA voice assistant, preloaded Malaysian navigation, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro instrument display and wireless charging for two phones at up to 15W.

The all-new Tayron scored a full 5-star Euro NCAP rating, with 87% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupant, 83% for vulnerable road users and 80% for safety assist.

The IQ.DRIVE suite is standard across both variants: Travel Assist with adaptive cruise control, Lane Assist, Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert and Exit Warning, Front Assist with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, Park Assist Plus, Emergency Assist and a Driver Attention and Drowsiness Monitor.

There are 9 airbags including a front-centre airbag between the driver and front passenger.

What the R-Line gets that the Elegance doesn't

If you are weighing up the two variants, here is exactly what the extra money buys on the R-Line:

• 2.0 TSI with 265 PS and 400 Nm versus the Elegance's 150 PS and 250 Nm, cutting 0-100 km/h from 9.6 to 6.1 seconds
• 4MOTION all-wheel drive instead of front-wheel drive
• IQ.LIGHT HD Matrix headlights with glare-free high beam, versus LED Plus units
• Dynamic turn signals front and rear
• 20-inch York black alloys on 255/40 tyres, versus 18-inch Napoli wheels on 235/55 rubber
• R-Line body styling on the bumpers, grille and sides
• 15-inch Discover Pro Max infotainment, up from 12.9 inches
• Head-up display, not available on the Elegance
• Harman Kardon sound system with 10+1 speakers, subwoofer, 700W output and 16-channel amplifier, versus the standard 8-speaker setup
• 360-degree Area View camera, versus a rear view camera only
• Sports front seats, black headliner, stainless steel pedals and Artvelours trim with aluminium accents, where the Elegance goes for wood trim, leatherette inserts and a ceramic-colour headliner
• Progressive steering
• Auto-dimming driver side mirror

The trade-off is fuel consumption: 8.5L/100km against the Elegance's 6.1L/100km on the WLTP cycle.

At just over RM200k on the road, the Tayron Elegance lands in a segment where Malaysian buyers already have the Hyundai Santa Fe and Mazda CX-80 to consider, plus cheaper seven-seat alternatives like the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and Proton X90 if badge equity matters less than ringgit.

What the Tayron brings is European chassis tuning, that Euro NCAP result and CKD assembly in Pekan.

The Tayron comes in five colours: the new Nightshade Blue and Oyster Silver, alongside Dolphin Grey, Oryx White and Grenadilla Black. The Elegance is on sale in Malaysia now and available for viewing at all Volkswagen dealerships, with the R-Line open for preview ahead of its full launch.
