Volkswagen Malaysia marks 50 years of the Golf GTI with limited edition rims for just 50 units

KUALA LUMPUR: The Golf GTI turns 50 this year, and Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) is marking the occasion in a fairly low-key but neat way.

Fifty units of the new Golf GTI will get a set of exclusive Huntsville Adamantium Dark alloy wheels, fitted at no extra cost.

That means the price stays exactly where it is. The Golf GTI still retails at RM255,990 in Malaysia, and the special rims come as a complimentary upgrade on top of that. The usual terms and conditions apply, and once those 50 units are gone, that's it.

So what are you actually getting? The 18-inch 5-spoke alloys feature a unique Y-spoke design in a dark finish, and the open spoke pattern leaves the GTI's red brake callipers clearly visible. It's a small change, but it does sharpen up the car's look, especially against the darker paint options.

For context, this is the Mk8.5 GTI that arrived in Malaysia late last year, locally assembled in Pekan and still the default choice for anyone shopping a proper hot hatch here. Its closest rivals in the Malaysian market are arguably the MINI Cooper S and the Honda Civic Type R sitting further up the price ladder, but the GTI has always occupied its own space as the everyday performance hatch.

A quick history refresher for those newer to the badge. The GTI started as a secret side project by a small group of Volkswagen engineers in the 1970s who wanted a sportier version of the Golf. It launched in Germany in 1976 and went on to become the template for the modern hot hatch, blending performance, practicality, and daily usability in a way very few cars have managed since. Five decades on, it's still the one enthusiasts point to first.

The limited edition rims are part of Volkswagen's global GTI 50 campaign, and Malaysian fans can expect more GTI-themed activity throughout 2026, including social media giveaways and activations at Volkswagen dealerships nationwide. The cars with the new wheels are available for viewing at showrooms across the country now.
