Volkswagen Tayron teased for Malaysia, seven-seat Tiguan Allspace successor launching soon

KUALA LUMPUR: Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has dropped its first official teaser of the Tayron, all but confirming that the seven-seat SUV is headed for a local launch.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What is the Volkswagen Tayron?

The Tayron is a stretched version of the third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, offered with up to seven seats. It replaces the Tiguan Allspace in markets like Malaysia and sits on the updated MQB Evo platform.
  • What engines will the Volkswagen Tayron get in Malaysia?

Nothing is confirmed yet, but Australia offers a 150 PS 1.4 litre turbo plus 2.0 litre TSI 4Motion variants with 204 PS or 265 PS, all with a seven-speed DSG. Malaysia is expected to follow a similar petrol lineup.
  • How much will the Volkswagen Tayron cost in Malaysia?

Pricing has not been revealed, but the outgoing Tiguan Allspace R-Line retails at around RM260,000, which gives a rough indication of where the Tayron could be positioned.
  • The shadowy image shows off the front and rear full-width light signatures, while the caption removes any remaining doubt: "Life is moving up a size. Tay tuned."

The Tayron is essentially a stretched version of the third-generation Tiguan, and it takes over from the Tiguan Allspace, which has been a steady seller for Volkswagen Malaysia thanks to its rare combination of European badge and seven seats.

With SUVs like the Mazda CX-80 and Hyundai Santa Fe occupying the same three-row space, the Tayron gives VPCM a fresh contender in a segment that still has surprisingly few premium-leaning options for Malaysian buyers.

Sitting on the updated MQB Evo platform shared with the new Tiguan, the Tayron stretches 4,792 mm long, 1,852 mm wide and 1,660 mm tall, with a 2,791 mm wheelbase. That makes it 253 mm longer than the standard Tiguan with a 114 mm longer wheelbase, and it also edges out the old Allspace by 66 mm in length.

The extra metal translates into real practicality gains. Fold the third row and you get 850 litres of boot space, 15 litres more than the Allspace managed, while five-seater versions get an even larger 885 litres.

Design-wise, it's very much a grown-up Tiguan, with a bolder face, a large lower grille and those signature light bars front and rear, the latter complete with an illuminated VW badge.

Malaysia looks set to receive the Elegance and R-Line variants. The Elegance rides on 19-inch Catania alloys, while the R-Line adds a sportier front bumper and 20-inch York wheels.

Inside, the dashboard borrows heavily from the Mk8 Golf, touch sliders for the air-con included, though the proper physical buttons on the steering wheel from the Mk8.5 update do make the cut here. There's also a rotary controller on the centre console covering volume, drive modes and ambient lighting themes.

A 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster comes standard, paired with either a 12.9-inch or 15-inch infotainment touchscreen, and the options list includes ventilated and massaging seats along with a Harman Kardon sound system.

The second row slides and reclines, splits 60:40, and its centre armrest hides a pair of cupholders plus a clip for propping up a phone or tablet on long drives.

As for what's under the bonnet, Malaysian-spec details haven't been confirmed, but the Australian lineup offers a useful hint. There, the Tayron is available with the familiar 1.4 litre turbo four making 150 PS and 250 Nm, as well as a 2.0 litre TSI with 4Motion all-wheel drive in 204 PS and 265 PS tunes, all paired with a seven-speed wet DSG.

Europe gets mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and diesel options, but Asia-Pacific markets have typically stuck to pure petrol power.

No launch date or pricing has been announced yet, though the outgoing Tiguan Allspace R-Line currently retails at around RM260,000, which gives a rough idea of where the Tayron could land.

Local assembly at the Pekan plant is also a strong possibility, given VPCM's previous comments about justifying its CKD investments. Expect the full reveal from Volkswagen Malaysia in the coming months.
