7 Driving Habits to pick for safe drive on busy highways

According to World Health Organization, more than 3400 people lose their lives on roads across the globe every day and tens of millions of humans are seriously injured or disabled every year. This figure sharply points to the fact that how important it is to develop and follow good driving habits so that innocent people do not have to face their end horribly on the road.

Accidents on road and highways can happen due to an array of reasons, but the most prominent one among them is definitely poor and careless driving habit. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; Speeding; Distracted driving etc. all fall under poor driving habits.

Few healthy driving habits are pinpointed here that will help to minimize road accidents on the busy streets anywhere across the globe.

Keep Your Mobile Aside and Focus on Driving

Avoid Mobile

Car collision cases claimed several lives on the road and on many such occasions it was found that the driver was busy answering the phone call while driving. Using handset and even a hands-free mobile phone during driving should be discontinued immediately and focus should be on the road ahead only. If it’s an urgent call, park the vehicle at the side of the road and then attend it.

Adhere to On-road Safety Rules & Regulations

Road Rules

Humans like challenging rules and live freely, but keeping this attitude on road, might very well end the life itself. Pay attention to all the traffic notifications, like the speed limit, construction, hazard signs and safety instructions. The habit to follow traffic signs and rules like local speed limits can shield you against many unpleasant traffic situations.

Resist the Habit of Speeding-up Unnecessarily

Speeding

Overspeeding on highways often ends up causing deadly road crashes. It’s easy to lose the control of the car and make mistakes when the vehicle is being run at a high speed. According to WHO report on road injuries, an increase in average speed on road has a direct connection to both the chances of a road crash and the seriousness of the crash consequences.

Get Your Vehicle Inspected Before Hitting the Road

Faulty vehicle and auto parts also have a great role in ensuring one’s safety on roads. Inspect the car for any irregularity or sign of repair and get it fixed properly by an experienced mechanic. This will ensure your auto parts will give peak performance and any kind of breakdown on a highway is avoided.

Follow the Flow and Avoid Reckless Driving

Develop the habit of matching or at least staying close to the highway traffic speed. Check the blind spots and pay attention to the mirrors. Use your turn signals appropriately to enter the highway safely and follow the flow of traffic.

Stay Aware of the Traffic Around on Road

Rear View Mirror

Tailgating the car or any vehicle ahead of your ride is a bad habit as it triggers the chance of car collision accidents.  A minimum of 2- to 3-second gap between your ride and the vehicle in front should be maintained. The mirror should be positioned appropriately to reduce blind spots, as it will help the driver stay aware of the vehicles beside and behind the car.

If You Feel Drowsy, Pull Over and Rest

Rest

Driving for a long time can make a driver feel tired and drowsy. If ever you feel so, discontinue driving and find a rest stop to take a nap. Do not be in a rush to keep on driving under such situation as this habit will endanger both your and other lives.

Life is precious, and developing healthy habits to safeguard it can never be a boring job. If a healthy driving habit is not picked and sustained now, road traffic accidents are predicted to become the seventh major cause of death by the year 2030.
