How to drive safely during a foggy weather

Visibility is the most important aspect while driving on the road. But sometimes we face situations where the visibility gets reduced. For example, during the rainy season or in winters when the roads are covered with fog. Here are some tips that you need to follow while driving in foggy weather.

Always use your fog lights

It is mandatory for any driver to use fog lights when even the visibility is compromised. Fog lights produce a high-intensity beam that enhances the visibility of the road. However, not all cars are equipped with fog lights, especially in the lower variants. You can always install them manually.

Drive only when needed

Better late than never. It is recommended to avoid driving during foggy weather. Until and unless it is very urgent, you should park your vehicle and wait for the fog to clear out. Once the visibility is back, you can start driving again. Notify your boss or colleagues that you will be late for work because of the weather.

Find a service station and take a pause

Fog can appear all of a sudden at any point in time. The road may have been clear when you left your place, but later there are chances that the road turns foggy in no time. If you face something like this drive slowly and take a halt at the nearest service station. Grab a cup of coffee and wait for the fog to clear out.

Slow and steady

If it is very urgent and you need to be at your destination, it is highly recommended that you drive slowly and stay focused on the road. Be aware of your surrounding and people nearby.

Dip your headlights

The most common suggestion to drive during reduced visibility is to turn on high beam. It might provide some amount of clarity but it could prove troubling for oncoming vehicles and might result in an accident. Hence, keep your headlights on normal mode.

Turn off the hazard light

Hazards lights should be used when your vehicle is stagnant, or you need to warn other drivers about a road hazard ahead. If you keep your hazard lights on, it can confuse the driver behind you, and he might hit his break hard which in turn could lead to an accident.

Turn on the heater

Fog usually appears during winters or in the rainy season. When the temperature is low outside, water vapour condenses inside the car and reduces the visibility even further. Turning on the heaters get rid of the moisture.

Stay awake, stay focused

You must concentrate hard on the road while driving through the foggy weather. Turn off your music and switch on the radio. Listen to what it is being forecasted. Also, keep your windows open and try to communicate with other drivers to know about the road ahead.

Keep adequate distance

While driving on a foggy road, keep enough distance between you and the vehicle ahead. As you can control your car if the driver in front hits the breaks suddenly.

Avoid changing lanes

Try to stay in the same lane while driving on a foggy road. Remember that changing lanes is very dangerous with less visibility because it is challenging to identify the distance between the vehicles.

Ask for help if needed

If the situation gets worse, ask your fellow passengers to keep an eye on oncoming vehicles and obstacles on the road.

That's all the tips we have in driving in foggy condition. Stay alert, and focused.
