The recent years have seen Hyundai going through a massive restyling exercise. And while the newcomers have all gotten new designs, the old horses like the Tucson are not far behind. The latest Hyundai to be launched in the country is indeed the facelifted for 2019, Hyundai Tucson. With many changes both inside and out, the Tucson is on sale in two different variants – Elegance with a 2L naturally aspirated engine and Turbo with a 1.6L turbocharged engine. Prices are slated to start from RM 123888 which will pit it against the Honda CR-V Turbo and the VW Tiguan among others. Here is a look at what you can expect from this SUV.

Interior & Features

The first thing you will notice once you move inside is the tablet style floating 7” LCD touchscreen mounted on top of the dashboard. This is further enhanced with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The interior comes in a carbon fiber-like trim for the Elegance and an artificial leather trim for the Turbo. Both come with LCD screens between analog dials serving as the instrument displays but the Turbo gets you an 8-way adjustable power driver seat, electronic parking brake, safety power windows, and electrochromic mirror. The rear seats are 6:4 reclining and folding. The space inside is very accommodating in every aspect. The Turbo also equips rear seat air vents, a USB charger, smart tailgate, and a fully automatic air conditioning system. The boot space is decent for the size at 488 L with the seats up and almost 1500 L with the seats down. But it is far from what the competition offers.

The styling of the Hyundai Tucson has been refreshed in just the right ways while still keeping it familiar. The cascading hexagonal grille (metallic silver on the Elegance and Chrome on the Turbo) still dominates the front. LED headlamps on the Turbo get new inserts and positioning lights while the Elegance has to do with projector headlamps. Same goes for rear lights with LEDs for the Turbo only. Front and rear fog lamps and LED DRLs are otherwise standard across both. The side view features chrome coated beltline molding, repeaters on rearview mirrors and chrome coated door handles. The Turbo is additionally provided with puddle lamps in rearview mirrors and pocket lighting for door handles. Apart from the LED combination tail lights for the Turbo, both variants are provided with reflector strips mounted high on the rear bumper giving them a distinct look. Both the variants come standard with swanky 5-spoke 17” alloys and 225/60 tires. The dimensions have also remained mostly unchanged at 4480 mm (L) X 1850 mm (W) X 1655 mm (H).

Ride & Handling

The ride is comfortable for an SUV with McPherson struts in the front and a Multi-Link setup in the rear. The steering is nice and there is a plenty of grip to allow good cornering speeds. The high ride height does lend some body roll but nothing unmanageable. Overall the Tucson will perform well as long it is not asked to perform like a sedan or a hot hatchback.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

The Elegance variant can be had with a Nu 2.0 MPi 1999 cc engine producing 153 hp at 6200 rpm and 192 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. The Turbo, however, comes with a Gamma 1.6 T-GDi 1591cc engine producing 174 hp at 5500 rpm and 265 Nm of torque between 1500 and 4500 rpm. The Elegance is also equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission while the Turbo is equipped with a 7-Speed dual clutch automatic. Both come with 2-wheel drive and 62 L petrol tanks. The engine on both is powerful enough. But the transmission on the Turbo causes some lag in putting down the power. This problem is not encountered in the Elegance with its regular automatic. The absence of paddle shifters on the Turbo makes this even more glaring.

Braking & Safety

The New Tucson is very well appointed in terms of safety equipment. There are disc brakes with ABS, brake assist, and downhill brake control as standard on all variants. Also, standard are electronic stability control, hill start assist control, and vehicle stability management.  The Elegance comes with two airbags, while the turbo comes with 6. While the rear-view camera is available on both, the Elegance gets park assist only for the rear.

Even the base trim for the Tucson packs in a lot of things that all trendy SUVs need to have. The price and the warranty schemes offered by Hyundai have already gained them many followers. The new Tucson is bound to carry that name even further.
