  • About Proton Malaysia

Being a national car company, Proton is the second-largest automotive brand in Malaysia as well as leading one in Southeast Asia. The company has a total of 617 authorized dealers across 138 cities of the country.

It currently operates three manufacturing plants, with a combined annual capacity of 360,000 units. The company headquarters is located in Shah Alam, Selangor, and additional facilities are operated at Proton City, Perak.

Proton was established in 1983 as the national car brand of Malaysia at the behest of Prime Minister, Dato' Seri Mahathir Mohamed, who had originally conceived the idea of a Malaysian car. The first Proton to hit the Malaysian streets was Saga, which was the result of a partnership with Japan's Mitsubishi Motors.

Proton produced its first indigenously designed non-badge engineered car in 2000 and elevated Malaysia as the 11th country in the world having the capability of car designing.

Proton’s line up currently comprises six models - Saga sedan, Persona sedan, Perdana sedan, Exora MPV, Iriz hatchback, and X70 SUV. While Suprima S hatchback, Ertiga mini-MPV, Prevé sedan are among the recently discontinued models.

According to the last year’s sales numbers, Proton grabs the second position after beating Honda and Toyota in the top ten car brands list in Malaysia. With a market share of 16.6% in 2019, Proton sold a total of 100,183 units. This is a massive increase of 54.7% as compared to 64744 units of 2018.

This is due to X70 sales, which gained a lot of applause and recognition immediately after the launch. Not only this, but revamped Persona, Iriz, Exora, Saga also contributed to the rising numbers. This year, the company has brought the CKD version of X70 and is getting ready for the debut of highly-anticipated Proton X50. For 2020, the sales target has been set at a whopping 32% higher.

The X70 CKD comes with some notable mechanical changes and lower pricing. The 2020 iteration of long-standing Proton Saga features a spacious and quiet cabin and many technological and safety appointments.

Proton, predominantly reliant on its domestic market, has teamed up with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group as part of a long-term turnaround plan. The Chinese automaker Geely purchased a 49.9% stake in Proton Cars in 2017. The joint venture brought Proton X70 based on Geely Boyue as its first model.

    • Promising national EV

I have been exploring affordable and reliable electric options, and this model caught my attention. The design looks fresh and modern, and the cabin feels quite tech-focused. It feels like a step forward in making EVs more accessible locally. It is comfortable enough for city use, and the instant torque it offers makes driving smooth. The expected range suits my

    • Comfort and Confidence All Around

I’ve been driving my Proton X70 in Malaysia for over 3 years now, and it’s been a great experience. The thing I love most is how comfortable the ride feels — whether I’m on city roads or going up to the hills, the suspension smooths out the bumps so passengers don’t feel tired. The cabin feels quiet and solid, and

    • Dependable Daily Car

I’ve been driving my Proton Saga in Malaysia for over a year now, and it’s been such a practical and stress-free car to own. What really stands out for me is how little it asks for in return — petrol cost is low, and I rarely worry about maintenance. The engine isn’t fast, but it’s smooth and predictable, which makes

    • Balanced Everyday Commuter

I’ve been driving my Proton X50 in Malaysia for about eight months, and it’s easily one of my favourite cars I’ve owned. What surprised me most is the engine’s punch — the turbo feels strong whether I’m cruising on highways or overtaking in town. Fuel economy is good too, especially considering the power it has. The infotainment system and voice

    • Smooth Daily Drive Experience

I’ve been driving my Proton S70 for about 3 months now, and honestly, it’s been a joy. The ride feels smooth even on rough roads here in Malaysia, and the cabin is quiet enough for music and conversations. Fuel economy is good too I’m getting more than I expected. I like the touchscreen and how easy it is to connect
